Artificial intelligence is being sold as a tool for a cleaner economy. But a fresh warning argues its most immediate energy impact may be to make fossil-fuel extraction more productive.

The concern emerged as AI moved from a futuristic concept into a practical tool for industrial planning and operations. One report’s blunt assessment was that “AI could help unlock more oil,” pointing to the technology’s potential role in finding, developing and managing petroleum resources.

That possibility matters because efficiency is not automatically climate progress. AI can be applied to grids, renewable-energy forecasting and energy conservation, but the warning is that oil and gas companies may be positioned to deploy it at greater scale and with faster financial returns. A separate report concluded that AI “will boost oil and gas production more than green energy,” framing the technology not as a neutral climate solution but as a force likely to amplify existing investment patterns.

The two assessments share the same underlying tension: AI’s capacity to optimize systems could benefit both clean power and fossil fuels. Their emphasis, however, is on the imbalance. If the largest near-term gains land in oil and gas fields rather than renewable projects, increased production could outweigh the emissions savings promised by smarter energy systems.

The debate therefore turns less on whether AI can aid the energy transition than on who directs it—and toward which infrastructure. Without policies that steer deployment toward low-carbon power, the race to make energy systems more efficient could also make fossil-fuel expansion easier.
