Hugging Face Bets a $399 Robot Duck Can Make Physical AI Less Intimidating
Hugging Face wants its next AI machine to look less like a factory worker—and more like a duck on roller skates. The $399 Microduck is a serious developer platform wrapped in an intentionally disarming toy-like shell.
The company and its Pollen Robotics unit unveiled the roughly 25-centimeter, one-eyed biped with preorders open and first deliveries promised before Christmas. It can waddle, crouch, recover after falls, carry up to 800 grams with its beak-like gripper and skate; demos also show it collecting socks, markers and balls.
That playful list masks Hugging Face’s real pitch: opening physical AI to more developers. Microduck uses a camera, lidar and motion sensors, while its software development kit, simulator and full reinforcement-learning training stack are available on GitHub. Behaviours can be trained in simulation, deployed to the robot, then refined and redeployed in the real world.
Pollen has added consumer-friendly flourishes, too. The robot can follow a laser pointer or be controlled with a gamepad, and each unit receives a distinct generated audio identity when first switched on—“closer to a creature than an assistant,” the company says.
Chief executive Clem Delangue frames its limits as part of the lesson. Microduck was designed to be “made to move, ready to fall,” he said, arguing that users should expect robots to make mistakes rather than treat failure as an exception. He told Axios he hopes sales can exceed 50,000 units—an ambitious target for a robot that is too small for major household chores but cheap enough to become a widespread experimentation tool.
The open-source approach offers users more control than a proprietary black box, Hugging Face argues. Yet the same camera, microphone and expandable app layer that make Microduck useful could expose private data if third-party software sends it elsewhere. The duck may be cute; the privacy trade-offs are not.
