Trump Renames Lake Ontario, but Canada Refuses to Play Along
Donald Trump has opened a new front in his clash with Canada—not at the border or in the tariff ledger, but on the map. His order to rechristen Lake Ontario “Lake America” is official for U.S. agencies, yet powerless to make Canada accept it.

The move followed the collapse of U.S.-Canada talks and Washington’s weekend imposition of 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods. Canada answered with tariffs on $20 billion in U.S. products, from steel and dairy to appliances and farm equipment.

On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to alter the name in the federal geographic naming service. Flanked by maps labeling the lake “Lake America” and promising to make the Great Lakes “even greater,” he declared the change “official, effective immediately.” The order itself allows agencies up to 30 days to carry it out.

Trump insisted the action was not intended as a geopolitical message, even as he tied it to long-running complaints about Canadian trade and military policy. “Canada’s been ripping us off for a long time,” he said, reviving his suggestion that the U.S. ally should be treated as a state.

Canada’s response was blunt and rooted in history. Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that the name predates both Canadian Confederation and the U.S. Declaration of Independence, writing that Canadians know “naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario — then, now and always.” Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston dismissed the exercise as respectively permanent nonsense and “real foolishness.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, whose state shares the lake, made clear the resistance was not confined to Canada: “New York won’t be calling it that.” Washington can determine its own official terminology, but no international naming authority—or presidential order—can compel its neighbor to redraw its maps.

Trump hinted the campaign may continue: after renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” last year, he said America now had “a gulf and … a lake,” leaving only “an ocean.”
