Instagram is drawing a sharper line around synthetic identities: users want to know when the person behind a profile is not real, while creators using AI for ordinary editing or design work are not the target.

The shift follows mounting frustration with AI influencers that can look increasingly indistinguishable from human creators. Instagram said it had heard from users who disliked finding that a seemingly human profile actually featured an AI-made person. “They want to know when a profile features an AI-generated person.”

On Monday, the platform said it would rename its existing “AI creator” disclosure as “AI-generated profile,” a more explicit label intended for accounts whose featured person was generated or substantially created with artificial intelligence.

The practical consequence is aimed at non-disclosure, not AI itself. Accounts that should carry the label but do not may have their reach cut, losing recommendations to non-followers in Reels and Explore. Owners who believe they were flagged in error can appeal. Those who disclose an AI-generated profile will not be penalized simply for using a synthetic persona.

Instagram is also drawing a boundary around the policy: users do not need the new label for AI-assisted photo edits, caption polishing, graphics or similar creative tweaks. That means the measure does not amount to a broad filter for AI-made content—a limitation critics of “AI slop” are likely to notice—but it does target the more sensitive problem of fictional people building credibility as if they were real.

The move lands amid wider scrutiny of AI influencers, including networks used to promote apps and synthetic health personalities making supplement claims. Instagram’s answer is narrower than a crackdown on generative AI: disclose the artificial person, or expect the algorithm to stop introducing that profile to new audiences.
