Nvidia’s Hugging Face Move Puts Open AI’s Neutrality on the Line
Nvidia’s reported pursuit of Hugging Face is being cast as both a strategic push into open AI and a potential threat to the neutrality that made the model-sharing platform influential in the first place.

The prospect surfaced as CNBC reported on “another possible acquisition from Nvidia,” while subsequent reporting said the chipmaker was in talks to purchase Hugging Face for roughly $13 billion. Neither company immediately responded to Business Insider’s requests for comment.

The timing matters. Nvidia has spent years moving beyond chips toward the software and developer ecosystems that determine where AI workloads run. It joined Hugging Face’s $235 million funding round in 2023 and already distributes its Nemotron open-model family on the platform. Last year, according to the report, Hugging Face rejected Nvidia’s proposed $500 million investment at a $7 billion valuation because it did not want a single investor to hold excessive influence.

For Nvidia, ownership could provide a hedge against a market led by closed-model rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic — particularly if those companies increasingly build their own chips. Brad Gastwirth of Circular Technology argued that “open source is an important counterweight to closed platforms like OpenAI and Anthropic.” Keeping AI development distributed across models and developers, he said, leaves Nvidia better positioned as the infrastructure provider.

But that logic cuts both ways. Hugging Face’s appeal rests on serving models across competing chips and clouds, including AMD and Google. “The biggest risk is neutrality,” Gastwirth said, warning Nvidia would need to avoid weakening the openness that gives the platform its value.

Hugging Face chief executive Clement Delangue’s recent repost celebrating an open-source “Micro Duck” underscores the community-facing ethos now at stake. A takeover may give Nvidia a larger say in what developers build — but only if it can resist turning an open hub into a captive channel.
