OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Ads to India as Its Revenue Race Intensifies
OpenAI casts advertising as the price of making ChatGPT available to more people, while critics and competitors see a test of whether a conversational AI can monetize without eroding user trust.
The groundwork was laid earlier this month, when OpenAI changed its terms to signal that ads would appear while people used the assistant. After debuting ads for U.S. users in February and expanding into Europe, the company has now brought the program to India’s ChatGPT Free and ₹399-a-month Go tiers—an enormous audience in one of its busiest markets.
OpenAI says it will begin with 50 brands, working with WPP and Omnicom, before launching an ad manager on Sept. 4 that will let marketers bid directly for campaigns. Dave Dugan, the company’s head of global ads solutions, said the product lets businesses reach people at “relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape.”
The company’s case is that ads can subsidize lower-cost access. A spokesperson said advertising would support “broader access to ChatGPT through free and lower-cost tiers,” while insisting ads will be labeled, visually separated and placed below responses; “Answer independence is non-negotiable.” OpenAI also says it will not serve ads to users who identify as, or are predicted to be, under 18.
The commercial pressure is clear. OpenAI is preparing for a possible public listing and needs revenue that can help cover the costly computing behind every query. Analysts argue that, unlike enterprise-heavy Anthropic, OpenAI’s vast consumer base makes advertising a logical lever. But Anthropic has drawn the line in the other direction, saying Claude will remain ad-free and its answers untouched by sponsored placements.
India is therefore more than another launch market: it is OpenAI’s proving ground for whether ads can turn scale into cash without turning ChatGPT into just another feed.
