ChatGPT Moves Into Epic Records as Safety Stakes Rise
OpenAI and its hospital partners cast the Epic connection as a time-saving layer for overwhelmed clinical teams, while the rollout’s critics-facing reality is simpler: even read-only AI summaries can carry high stakes when they shape care decisions.
Last month, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT for health to U.S. consumers, saying users were already putting roughly 300 million health-related questions to the service each week. The company has maintained that the tool is not appropriate for diagnosis or treatment, a boundary that becomes more consequential as its technology reaches deeper into clinical workflows.
Now OpenAI is connecting ChatGPT for Healthcare to Epic, whose electronic-record system holds data on more than 325 million patients. Authorized clinicians can pull in appointment notes, lab results, medications and specialist documentation, ask what has changed since a prior visit, and prepare clinical timelines. The access is read-only: ChatGPT cannot write back into the patient chart.
OpenAI’s case is that the product complements—not replaces—the record system and gives staff more time for patients. UCSF Health, a pilot partner, said the integration could help teams see “what has changed and what matters most across a complex patient record,” potentially reducing time spent synthesizing data. The company is also adding a plugin that searches nine official public-health sources, including PubMed, DailyMed, ClinicalTrials.gov and CMS Coverage.
But the safety argument remains unresolved. OpenAI says physicians rated 99.1% of 4,363 responses across 27 clinical use cases as safe. Yet the same rollout arrives after a Florida pastor sued, alleging ChatGPT gave him a near-fatal recommendation, and after a May lawsuit in which relatives blamed the chatbot for harmful dosage advice. In medicine, the small fraction of failures may matter most.
