Nvidia’s DLSS 5 Debuts Under a Cloud of AI Face-Lift Doubts
Nvidia presents DLSS 5 as a developer-controlled leap toward more realistic games, while critics see an AI filter that can reshape a title’s intended look. Its first release offers a more restrained test—but also a narrow one.

The dispute began with Nvidia’s March unveiling, when the company called DLSS 5 its “most significant breakthrough in computer graphics since the debut of real-time ray tracing in 2018.” The pitch was ambitious: AI-driven enhancements based on a game’s source content, with developers able to decide how strongly the system changes each scene.

The early demonstrations, however, sparked a backlash. Critics mocked examples in which characters appeared markedly altered, including what was dubbed the “yassification” of Resident Evil Requiem protagonist Grace Ashcroft. The concern was not simply sharper textures or richer lighting; it was that generative processing could substitute an AI-styled interpretation for an artist’s original image.

On September 3 at 9 p.m. PT, NBA 2K27 becomes the first official proving ground. DLSS 5 will launch on RTX 50-series desktop and laptop GPUs and via GeForce Now, but Nvidia has not said when it will reach other games—including Requiem, EA Sports FC, Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy, all shown during the March reveal.

In the basketball game, the effects shown to reporters appear less extreme: added shadows and textures make players look more realistic rather than overtly caricatured. Nvidia says developers can adjust individual elements—or leave faces untouched while enhancing details such as foliage, food or silverware.

That flexibility does not erase the hardware question. Nvidia estimates a 50 to 60 percent performance hit; its claim that an RTX 5060 can run the game at 1080p with ray tracing and ultra DLSS 5 relies on a top-tier CPU and 6x frame generation. The launch, then, is both a debut and a cautious audition for technology still asking players to trust what AI adds to the picture.
