Dyson sees its CameraJet as a shortcut for people who skip flossing; critics see another intimate corner of life being fitted with a camera. The question is whether smarter oral care outweighs the cost—and the discomfort—of bringing Wi-Fi and AI to the bathroom sink.

Dyson launched the $499 CameraJet as an electric toothbrush and precision flosser designed to combine two routines that many people struggle to maintain. Its central promise is automation: a small camera in the brush head identifies gaps between teeth, then triggers a spray to clear them while the user brushes.

The gadget streams a view from inside the mouth to a phone over Wi-Fi, a feature that makes its premium pitch unusually literal. One account framed the proposition bluntly: Dyson has produced a “high-tech, WiFi-connected, AI-aided toothbrush” costing about $500. That price places it beyond routine dental hardware, although supporters may argue the device earns its keep by making flossing less dependent on habit.

The technical case is more elaborate than the novelty suggests. Dyson says its camera captures 28 live images a second; its Gap Optical Targeting system detects a space and, within 100 milliseconds, sends a cone-shaped mouthwash blast between teeth. The company says the images are neither kept on the device nor sent to the cloud. The brush head also oscillates nearly 1,000 times per second, while a docking station refills its 12.5ml mouthwash reservoir in three seconds.

Still, the CameraJet arrives amid what one observer calls the “Great Camera-fication of Household Items,” alongside doorbells, robot vacuums and smart appliances. Dyson says the camera is built for short-range detection and that app images are deleted immediately after viewing. For buyers, that assurance will compete with a simpler alternative: save $499 and remember to floss.
