Three AI Giants Went Down Together, Then Came Back Online
The outages exposed a shared vulnerability in an AI market that is rapidly becoming everyday infrastructure: users saw three leading chatbots fail in overlapping windows, while the companies offered only limited, separate explanations.

Reports first flagged widespread problems with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and xAI’s Grok, an unusual convergence even as outages at individual services have become familiar. Downdetector data indicated all three were down Thursday morning, while Google’s Gemini also drew scattered reports without a confirmed outage notice.

The clearest timeline came from service updates. Grok began experiencing problems across Android, iOS and the web at about 9:30 a.m. ET; users prompting it through X were told, “This model is overloaded right now. Please try again shortly or pick a different model.” xAI later restored the service.

ChatGPT followed at roughly 11 a.m. ET, returning errors as OpenAI’s status page reported “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex.” The disruption reached far beyond ordinary chats, affecting logins, uploads, voice mode, search, deep research and image generation. It also arrived as OpenAI was teasing Astra, a new AI model.

At around the same time, Claude, Claude Code and the Claude API went offline. Anthropic technical staff member CJ Avilla attributed the partial outage to an “infrastructure issue”; the company said the problem was resolved by about 12:15 p.m. ET.

By later in the day, all three services were back online. But restoration did not settle the central question: there was no public confirmation that the incidents shared a cause, and requests for comment to OpenAI, xAI and Anthropic did not immediately produce answers.
