Nvidia’s $13 Billion Hugging Face Bet Tests the Meaning of Open AI
Nvidia’s agreement to buy Hugging Face for $12.93 billion brings the leading repository for open AI models, datasets and tools under the control of the company whose chips power much of the generative-AI boom.

The path to the deal began with months of speculation. In August, reports said Hugging Face was exploring a sale and that Nvidia had begun acquisition talks. Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue later said he had approached Jensen Huang over the summer after concluding that the company — and open-source AI more broadly — had reached a “turning point” requiring more resources, scale and visibility.

On Thursday, Nvidia confirmed the transaction, its second-largest acquisition on record. Huang said the company would use its infrastructure to broaden access, while making a central pledge to developers: “Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem.” He said users would continue choosing their models, clouds, frameworks and computing platforms, and that Nvidia hardware would not be required.

That assurance matters because Hugging Face is no niche asset. More than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use the platform, which hosts over 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications, according to Nvidia. Yet the strategic logic is hard to miss: ownership gives Nvidia a deeper foothold in the software layer as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google pursue their own chips.

Delangue has argued that the deal can preserve open AI rather than dilute it, saying the community had proved it could be “a complement, and even an alternative” to closed systems. Industry partners echoed that optimism. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the combination would “strengthen the open model ecosystem,” while Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said he expected it to keep flourishing.

The next test is practical: whether competing chipmakers, cloud providers and developers keep treating Nvidia-owned Hugging Face as neutral ground.
