OpenAI Pauses Pro Sales as Astra Demand Overruns Capacity
OpenAI has paused new subscriptions to its $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro plan after demand for GPT-6 Astra put unusual pressure on its infrastructure. The company’s calculation is blunt: restrict the tier that consumes the most resources rather than let service degrade across the wider product.

Thibault Sottiaux, an OpenAI executive, said Pro subscriptions “put the most strain on our systems,” and that pausing them was the “smallest step” that would preserve “the broadest access possible.” He said the company was adding capacity as quickly as it could.

The move marks a rare admission that a flagship model’s popularity can become a constraint in its own right. For prospective Pro customers, the pause closes off the premium tier just as Astra’s capabilities appear to be drawing the strongest interest. For existing users, OpenAI is presenting the restriction as protection rather than retreat.

Sam Altman sharpened that priority as the capacity crunch unfolded. Responding to the prospect of limits, he wrote: “This would suck, but we will prioritize great service for customers until we can get back on top of things.” The message aligns with Sottiaux’s rationale, but also makes clear that new sales will remain secondary until performance is steadier.

Even so, OpenAI is not simply narrowing access. In a subsequent announcement, Greg Brockman highlighted free GPT-6 Astra Pro access for verified U.S. clinicians through ChatGPT for Clinicians. That creates a telling split-screen: the company is shutting the paid door to new general subscribers while opening a targeted one for healthcare professionals.

For now, OpenAI’s answer to Astra’s success is triage—hold back demand, protect current customers and build fast enough to reopen the queue.
