Astra’s Breakout Demand Forces OpenAI to Shut the Door on New Pro Users
OpenAI began Astra’s rollout last week cautiously, initially giving only a small group of enterprise customers access while it built out computing capacity. The model’s “computer use” feature—designed to operate a desktop by filling forms and navigating websites—also consumes usage allowances faster than the company’s prior flagship model, GPT-5.6 Sol.

Once Astra reached paying users, that restraint gave way to a rush. On Wednesday, product chief Thibault Sottiaux said demand was “unprecedented” and warned that OpenAI might have to halt new Pro subscriptions if the pressure persisted. Sam Altman acknowledged the prospect bluntly: “This would suck, but we will prioritize great service for customers until we can get back on top of things.”

On Thursday, OpenAI followed through, pausing new sign-ups and upgrades for its $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro tier. Existing Pro subscribers are unaffected. Sottiaux said the tier puts the greatest strain on OpenAI’s systems, and that the company chose “the smallest step” that could preserve “the broadest access possible” while it adds capacity.

The decision creates an awkward split in Astra access. New Pro customers are locked out, yet Greg Brockman promoted free Astra Pro access for verified U.S. clinicians through ChatGPT for Clinicians. That suggests OpenAI is not simply rationing the model by price; it is also making targeted choices about where scarce capacity goes.

This is not OpenAI’s first subscription pause: it stopped new ChatGPT Plus sign-ups after a 2023 developer-conference surge. But the latest crunch comes after the company says its available compute rose from 0.2 gigawatts in 2023 to roughly 1.9 GW in 2025—and as it pursues far larger Nvidia, AMD and custom-chip deployments from late 2026. Astra has turned that expansion race into an immediate customer-service problem.
