OpenAI’s Caltech Retreat Exposes Math’s AI Generation Divide
OpenAI has pulled its sponsorship from Caltech’s proposed AI Mathathon after mathematicians attacked the competition as a vehicle for rushed, poorly understood AI-generated mathematics. The withdrawal followed an open letter urging the event’s cancellation and warning that it could damage the discipline.
The dispute began with a student-led ambition: use powerful AI systems in a multi-day effort against difficult theoretical problems. Organizer Caiman Moreno-Earle said the project grew from watching AI make startling progress on questions that had frustrated professors. Anthropic offered $1 million in computing power, and OpenAI matched it — abruptly turning what he called a “fun little experiment” into an undertaking with obligations to the mathematics community.
When the event flyer appeared on September 4, the reaction was swift. More than 700 academics and students signed a letter objecting to the claim that AI could solve conjectures faster than mathematicians, calling it “motivated and empirically dubious.” They also feared a corporate marketing spectacle and incentives to produce work faster than humans could properly verify it.
That concern reflects a deeper professional divide. University of Connecticut professor Álvaro Lozano-Robledo argued that machine output alone is not mathematical advancement: “The actual progress is when human knowledge advances.” Yann LeCun amplified the alarm, reposting a call to read an open letter signed by 24 Fields Medalists titled “A Severe Misalignment of AI in Mathematics.”
OpenAI then withdrew its $1 million in tokens, with research lead Dan Roberts acknowledging on X that AI’s rapid progress in mathematics is disruptive. But organizers have declined to cancel the Mathathon, scheduled to begin October 30, and say they are seeking replacement support. Moreno-Earle’s answer to critics is blunt: students “don’t have the luxury of waiting around to find out.”
The clash is therefore not simply about one campus event. It is a fight over who gets to set the rules for AI in mathematics — and whether caution protects the field or leaves its youngest entrants unprepared for what is already coming.
