ChatGPT Wants Your Voice to Run the Show, but Screens Still Matter

OpenAI is bringing voice-driven AI agents to ChatGPT mobile, allowing paid subscribers to delegate multi-step tasks across connected apps. The company sees speech as AI’s future interface, while acknowledging work still demands a mix of voice, text and screens.

OpenAI has extended ChatGPT’s agentic voice tools from desktop to mobile, turning a phone—or CarPlay—into a place where users can ask the chatbot to work across connected services. The update can handle requests such as checking email or summarizing a Google Drive file through spoken commands.

The rollout, announced Wednesday, gives Plus and Pro subscribers mobile access to ChatGPT’s Work tab, where they can draft documents and emails, summarize Slack messages, build websites and presentations, and use a cloud browser. Free and Go users will be able to use plugins and connected apps. OpenAI also says conversations will offer richer text output and let users move more easily between voice and text—or begin work on a phone and continue on desktop.

That continuity is central to OpenAI’s pitch. Its GPT-Live voice model had already powered conversational features and desktop agent tasks; now it is being connected to models capable of acting in browsers and on computers. In a demonstration, ChatGPT voice analyzed DoorDash spending, booked a pickleball court for $5 and reorganized a calendar—all through speech.

Atty Eleti, OpenAI’s product lead for ChatGPT voice, frames the ambition plainly: “In the future, we really imagine people using voice as the primary modality to interact with AI.” He argues that users can “blurt out” requests while walking or commuting, rather than stopping to type.

The competitive pressure is visible. Elon Musk highlighted new Grok Bot functions including voice calls and memos, inline email and Slack drafts, account switching and routing traffic through a desktop. Anthropic, meanwhile, has also worked to smooth the mobile-to-desktop handoff, though OpenAI continues to separate chat from workspaces.

Still, OpenAI does not claim the keyboard and display are finished. Offices remain desktop-centered, and reading is often faster than listening. “We don’t think of this as just pure voice in and voice out,” Eleti said. “Sometimes it’s text, sometimes it’s voice, sometimes it’s a mix.”
