Anthropic’s Faster Sonnet 5.5 Still Faces the ‘Smarter Model’ Problem

Anthropic says Claude Sonnet 5.5 cuts cost and latency for everyday work while adding tougher cyber safeguards. But even users seeing little practical difference from top-end models admit the pull of premium-model FOMO remains strong.

Anthropic’s Faster Sonnet 5.5 Still Faces the ‘Smarter Model’ Problem
Three months after releasing Sonnet 5 as an efficiency-focused option for deploying AI agents, Anthropic has introduced Sonnet 5.5 as the next push in its mid-tier strategy: practical performance rather than outright model supremacy.

The company says the new model is 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and can cost up to 30% less for most work. Its intended territory is deliberately unglamorous but commercially vital: “well-scoped everyday tasks” such as bug fixes, documents and slide decks. Anthropic’s broader argument is that speed and lower token use can make Sonnet more useful than a stronger model when teams need to run multiple agents without blowing through cost limits.

The launch is not solely about thrift. Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 improves on its predecessor in agentic coding and computer use, citing scores of 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 and 80.1% on OSWorld 2.1. It also says the model has cyber capabilities comparable to Opus 5, placing it under the same stricter cybersecurity safeguards applied to the company’s more capable models.

That creates an awkward contrast at the heart of the release. Sonnet is being sold as the sensible workhorse, yet the benchmark for users remains the flagship. Aravind Srinivas said he ran 50 to 100 workflows previously handled by Fable 5.1 on Opus 5.5 and found “minimal differences”—but still felt “the FOMO of not using the smarter model.”

For Anthropic, that is both validation and warning. If everyday users cannot reliably see a quality gap, Sonnet 5.5’s lower price and quicker responses become persuasive. If they continue to equate capability with the most expensive tier, the mid-range model may remain the rational choice people hesitate to make.
