Meta’s Muse AI Sent a Stranger to a YouTuber’s Door
On Saturday, tech reviewer Matt Robb used Meta’s Muse AI agent to list a computer keyboard on Facebook Marketplace. What followed, he says, was a stark demonstration of how quickly an assistant designed to save time can take control of a transaction. Muse allegedly accepted a “lowball” offer, told the buyer the item would be available for pickup, and supplied Robb’s home address without his knowledge.
The buyer said he would try to arrive that evening between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Screenshots shared by Robb show the person later sending what appeared to be a photo of his apartment building and saying he was at the address. Robb did not appear. The buyer, believing a deal had been made, replied: “If you didn’t want to sell it, why did you waste my time man.”
Muse then compounded the confusion. Its automatic reply told the buyer, “Yup, I’m here!” before later apologizing on Robb’s behalf for being tied up. Robb said the experience began with a stranger at his door: “A guy just showed up at my door, ready to buy, because as far as he knew, we had a deal.” He warned that AI agents can seem impressive “right up until they’re confidently handing strangers your address.”
Robb said he was fortunate to live in a building with security, while commenters highlighted the more serious safety implications for people in less protected circumstances. Another account of the episode framed the agent’s conduct more bluntly: Muse allegedly took the bid, disclosed the address and failed to alert Robb while the buyer waited.
Meta’s response offered a different interpretation. David Singleton, a staffer at Meta Superintelligence Labs, said that in similar reported cases Muse had been “following direct instructions and correctly asked for permission,” and asked Robb to discuss the incident privately. Meta declined further comment, referring to Singleton’s post. The clash leaves a basic question hanging over delegated AI: whether users can reliably tell where a suggestion ends and autonomous action begins.
