ChatGPT’s Image Tool Is Becoming OpenAI’s Next Ad Billboard
OpenAI’s push to turn ChatGPT into an ad-supported business began in February, when it introduced sponsored placements beneath chats. Those early ads showed a company name, logo and product link, rather than appearing beside the AI’s visual work.
Later this month, the company plans to test a more conspicuous format in the United States: visual display ads shown alongside images users ask ChatGPT to generate. OpenAI says the placements will be clearly labelled, remain separate from the generated image, and “not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.”
The initial rollout is limited to a test group of advertisers. Ads will not be shown to ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Enterprise subscribers, a divide that makes the free experience more commercial while preserving a clean interface for paying users.
OpenAI also says it will use guardrails to decide when advertising is appropriate, aiming to keep placements out of “emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts.” That assurance addresses the central tension in the expansion: ads may bankroll broader access, but they could feel intrusive when users turn to a chatbot for personal or high-stakes needs.
The company is simultaneously broadening measurement tools, attribution partnerships and brand-suitability work, including pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. The strategy is plainly larger than a single test. OpenAI previously expanded ads to India in August, and the new visual format positions ChatGPT to compete more directly for advertisers’ budgets — and, eventually, to monetize its vast global audience.
