TikTok Is Turning Its Endless Scroll Into a One-Click Storefront
TikTok Shop arrived in the United States in September 2023, giving the video platform a dedicated marketplace and a growing foothold in social commerce. By 2025, eMarketer estimated the service generated about $15.8 billion in U.S. sales — roughly 18% of the country’s social-commerce market.
Now TikTok is pushing shopping beyond that separate hub and into the endless, algorithmic stream that made the app a cultural force. The company announced Monday that it is rolling out a conversational Shopping Assistant, designed to retain shoppers’ preferences and answer questions on product details, sizing, availability and shipping before helping complete a purchase.
At the same time, a new checkout tool will let people buy from brands directly from the For You feed with one click. The shift is simple but consequential: the app wants to capture the moment when a video creates desire, then keep the research and payment that follow from leaking to a retailer’s site, a search engine or an outside chatbot.
That ambition reflects a broader change already visible to users. “Scrolling has become synonymous with shopping,” one account of TikTok’s expanding retail role observed, arguing that the platform has been especially adept at closing the gap between entertainment and purchase.
TikTok’s case for the expansion is backed by its own economic-impact figures: 54 million Americans said they bought a product after seeing it in a TikTok video, while platform activity helped generate $81 billion in GDP for U.S. businesses. The company is building the new tools with partners including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe.
For shoppers, the pitch is convenience. For TikTok, it is control of a more valuable stretch of the buying journey — from impulse to checkout — inside the feed.
