Bezos Sees AI Shrinking the Workweek—Even as Amazon Cuts Jobs
Speaking to Fox News this week, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos laid out an unusually sunny version of the AI future: productivity rises so sharply that many households no longer need two paychecks.
“You’re not going to need to have a two-earner income household,” Bezos said. A second adult could keep working by choice, he added, but “one of the people might drop out.”
The next step in his forecast is a shorter workweek. Bezos said some workers may conclude: “I can support my family working three days a week. That’s what productivity in the economy means.” The supposed paradox, in his telling, is that greater automation would not necessarily leave employers drowning in applicants; it could instead make hiring tougher as more people decide they need less paid work.
That argument puts Bezos on the bullish end of a debate that has intensified since generative AI went mainstream. He acknowledges the investment frenzy may be hard to navigate—“every experiment gets funded,” including bad ideas—but insists the underlying technology is real and socially beneficial.
The backdrop complicates the promise. Amazon, founded by Bezos and now spending heavily on AI infrastructure, has cut roughly 30,000 corporate jobs since late last year. For workers, that leaves a more immediate question than whether Fridays disappear: who gains the freedom created by productivity, and who absorbs the disruption first?
Other technology leaders broadly share Bezos’s expectation of fewer working hours, though not his precise timetable. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang has floated a four-day week; JPMorgan Chase’s Jamie Dimon has suggested 3.5 days; Bill Gates has speculated about two. Elon Musk goes furthest, predicting AI and robotics could eventually make work optional. Meanwhile, a Yale Budget Lab analysis found AI’s job-market effect since late 2022 has been modest so far—more alteration than wholesale elimination of jobs.
