Airbnb Draws a Line on Checkout Chores, but Hosts Say It Risks the Home-Rental Model

Airbnb will bar hosts from imposing labor-intensive checkout chores on new bookings from November 20, answering guest complaints over cleaning fees while provoking a backlash from hosts worried about costs and property care.

For years, Airbnb guests have complained about a familiar contradiction: paying a cleaning fee, then receiving a checkout list that can include stripping beds, washing dishes and hauling away rubbish. Airbnb’s latest policy update is its answer. For reservations made on or after November 20, hosts may no longer require tasks involving “significant effort or time” or work normally done by a cleaner.

The restrictions are specific. Guests cannot be ordered to wash and put away dishes, start laundry, remove sheets or take trash off the property. Hosts can still ask for lighter steps — leaving used dishes in the sink, gathering towels, sorting rubbish into indoor bins, or switching off air conditioning when leaving. Airbnb will also make requests more visible in a new listing section, and says hosts cannot bypass the rules through messages or signs.

The company has left room for practical exceptions. In bear country, for instance, a host may require rubbish to go into an animal-proof container; water-conservation requests may also be permitted where drought is a concern.

For travelers, the move addresses a grievance sharpened by years of arguments over cleaning charges and onerous instructions. Airbnb had already faced scrutiny over fee transparency: it said more than 260,000 hosts reduced or dropped cleaning fees in 2023, and began showing total pre-tax prices by default worldwide in May 2025.

But hosts pushing back on Airbnb’s forums argue that basic guest participation protects sanitation and keeps a private rental workable between stays. One said the policy gives guests “complete freedom to be lazy while the hosts bear the risk,” warning that erasing such expectations makes Airbnb less distinct from a hotel and could drive long-time owners off the platform.

That is the tension Airbnb is now formalising: fewer surprise chores for guests, but less discretion for hosts who say the personal, shared-responsibility model is precisely what made their listings viable.
