OpenAI Chases $30 Billion Private Bridge Before a Risky IPO Leap
OpenAI’s latest fundraising push comes after a rapid escalation in its private-market price. In March, the ChatGPT maker was valued at $852 billion post-money; by June, it had confidentially filed IPO paperwork, setting up a public-listing debate without committing to a timetable.

By August, CFO Sarah Friar told employees the company “will be a public company in 2027,” according to people familiar with the plans. A month later, however, CEO Sam Altman struck a more guarded note, saying “right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public.”

That caution now appears to be driving a fresh private-capital solution. OpenAI is reportedly nearing a round of up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation, led by Coatue and investors from the United Arab Emirates. The financing is being framed as an “opportunistic” bridge to a possible IPO, rather than a replacement for one.

The proposed price also suggests a recalibration. Bloomberg had previously reported that OpenAI was pursuing $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation; current terms remain under negotiation and could still change. Yet even at $1.25 trillion, OpenAI would set a new benchmark for private-company valuation.

For OpenAI, the appeal is clear: more time, more cash and potentially more computing capacity. Alongside the investment, the company is negotiating a commercial arrangement for additional UAE-based compute, crucial as it targets roughly $600 billion in total compute spending by 2030. The trade-off is equally stark: each private raise lifts expectations for an eventual IPO already shadowed by rival Anthropic’s own public-market ambitions.
