Malaysia’s AI-chip crackdown exposes a suspected re-export pipeline

Malaysian customs has seized 30 servers worth about $12.2 million, alleging they were falsely declared and routed through the country to evade controls on advanced AI chips. The case follows an earlier airport seizure and tighter permit rules introduced under U.S. pressure.

Malaysia’s customs department said Wednesday it had seized 30 servers fitted with advanced AI chips, suspecting an export-control breach and a wider effort to use the country as a transit point for onward shipments elsewhere in Asia.

The case sits in the shadow of Malaysia’s permit regime, introduced last year for the export, transit and transshipment of high-performance AI chips of U.S. origin. The rules followed pressure from Washington, which has sought to block China’s access to leading semiconductors over concerns about Beijing’s AI and military capabilities.

Customs officials say the latest shipment was intercepted on Oct. 15 in the free-trade zone at Malaysia’s main airport. Valued at about 50 million ringgit, or $12.2 million, the servers had arrived from an Asian country and were declared as electric components, airport customs director Aspalila Ag Tuah said. Investigators believe the goods were to be re-exported to another Asian destination without the necessary permit.

Authorities’ central allegation is not simply a paperwork lapse but a deliberate transit strategy. “The syndicate is using Malaysia as a transit destination to ensure there would be no restrictions imposed while the servers are exported to the next destination,” the customs department said.

The Oct. 15 interception was not the first warning sign. Aspalila said it was believed to be tied to a group behind five attempted smuggling operations, including a June seizure of 72 servers carrying advanced AI chips at the same airport free-trade zone. A Malaysian company that facilitated the latest shipment has been called in to assist the investigation, while officials have withheld the chips’ origin and final destination.
