ChatGPT’s desktop app has accumulated layers: a ChatGPT area and a Codex area, with separate Chat and Work tabs inside ChatGPT. That structure can leave users unsure where a project lives or which mode they are using.

OpenAI is now preparing to remove one of those divisions. In an email to users, the company said it will merge the Chat and Work tabs into a single ChatGPT experience, initially offering it to select users for feedback before a wider release. The stated aim is to let people move “from exploring an idea to having ChatGPT carry it through, all in one place.”

The unified space is meant to combine conversational work with practical tasks: users can add files and plugins, ask ChatGPT to build a website or presentation, or direct it to perform tasks on the web while reviewing the result. But OpenAI is drawing a clear line around Codex. “Codex will remain a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app,” the email said.

That separation does not extend to usage limits. Under the change, ChatGPT and Codex will pull tokens from the same allowance pool. OpenAI said most users should not be affected, though heavier users or those using certain models could find themselves waiting for their allowance to reset more often.

The rollout is not yet live for everyone. Thibault Sottiaux of OpenAI said the company is working on the merger but that it is “not rolling out just yet.” The move follows a similar consolidation by rival Anthropic, which combined Claude’s chat and Cowork functions into one screen.
