Meta has acquired Conductor, a startup founded in 2024 that lets software engineers run and manage multiple AI coding agents across parallel workspaces. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal lands as coding becomes a strategic front in the battle for AI users and enterprise spending. Axios reported that Meta is seeking to build an ecosystem capable of competing for developers, whom the industry increasingly treats as AI’s most consequential power users.

Conductor’s proposition is orchestration rather than building the underlying models. Its platform can deploy agent teams in the cloud, locally or through a phone, assigning them separate, compartmentalized parts of a software project. The agents themselves come from major labs including Anthropic and OpenAI.

Charlie Holtz, Conductor’s founder and chief executive, announced the transaction on Wednesday: “Conductor is joining Meta.” He said the company had “big, crazy plans for the next interface” and promised something new for customers by early next year.

For now, Holtz said Conductor’s core features will continue as before. But its cloud service will close on November 20, after which user cloud data will begin to be deleted—a sharp operational deadline amid the upbeat acquisition message.

Meta has been accelerating after trailing rivals in AI services. It launched its Muse Code coding agent in August, while its wider Muse agent service has passed 10 million users, according to TechCrunch. Conductor could help turn that momentum into developer infrastructure.

The timing underscores the wider land grab. On the same day, OpenAI told Axios it planned to acquire Pierre Computer, which focuses on storing and managing AI-generated code; it had also announced plans in June to buy Ona, a cloud coding-environment and agent-orchestration startup. Meta’s bet is that smarter agents alone will not settle the contest. Someone must coordinate the swarm.
