ChatGPT’s Search Surge Puts Google on Notice
OpenAI’s challenge to Google’s search supremacy has moved from theory to a provocative new benchmark: ChatGPT is now handling search-like queries at roughly one-fifth of Google’s volume.
At a Monday press event, Adam Fry, OpenAI’s consumer product lead for ChatGPT, said the company counts a search when a user’s prompt triggers a web lookup—not routine chatbot tasks such as definitions or simple how-to answers. He did not disclose the source for the Google comparison, and one-fifth remains far short of overtaking the market leader. Still, the figure is notable beside Bing’s roughly 3% share after more than a decade of Microsoft effort, and it underscores the disruptive threat Google itself identified when ChatGPT emerged.
The timing matters. Google has spent two decades dominating web search and says it processes 5 trillion searches a year, but its results have drawn mounting complaints over SEO-heavy pages, advertising and the difficulty of finding useful information. For many users, ChatGPT offers a cleaner route to an answer—though not necessarily a more reliable one. The chatbot can still hallucinate or simply get facts wrong, a risk that remains central as people turn to AI for information.
Critics of Google interpret ChatGPT’s momentum less as a triumph of AI than as an indictment of the incumbent. “People were really, really, fed up with Google search results,” one account argued, pointing to growing appetite for answers without “all the SEO fluff.”
Google, meanwhile, has rejected the idea that every chatbot query represents a lost search. Alphabet chief executive Sundar Pichai said that even as chatbots reached hundreds of millions of users, “We’ve grown in queries,” adding that the market felt “very far from a zero-sum game.”
That is the central contest now: OpenAI is betting that search becomes an interactive AI interface, while Google is betting its enormous query engine can absorb the shift without surrendering its lead.
