Google’s school AI policy leaves educators facing a search-or-AI bind
Google’s new K-12 policy landed Tuesday as an apparent concession to schools wary of students using Gemini to shortcut assignments. AI products would be disabled by default, with administrators choosing what to enable. But Google also classified Search as part of that AI portfolio — creating the prospect that schools declining AI altogether would lose logged-in student search access.
That coupling triggered an immediate political backlash. Google education vice president Chris Phillips had said that “Search and AI are deeply integrated,” and that students at schools that did not opt in would not have access to Search. Sen. Bernie Sanders called the arrangement “extortion,” while New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Google was using monopoly power to force AI into public schools. Former FTC Chair Lina Khan framed it as another warning about an essential service controlled by an “unregulated monopolist.”
The concern is practical as well as political. Teachers and parents fear AI Overviews can steer students toward instant answers rather than research and critical thinking; for districts built around Chromebooks and Google’s education software, moving to another search provider is not a simple switch.
Google moved to contain the damage later Tuesday, saying Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Search were off by default and that “schools are in control.” It also promoted Guided Learning, which it says will walk students through problems instead of supplying answers.
Yet the clarification did not resolve the central objection. Google said schools can disable Gemini apps while retaining Search, or shut off all AI-linked products, including Search. What it will not offer is ordinary Google Search stripped of AI Overviews and AI Mode. In effect, districts can choose Google search with its AI layer, or no Google search for student accounts — not the AI-free search many educators had sought.
