Let the child's question shape your next response.
Let the child’s question shape your next response.
Working with children brings many small decisions into the day. You might be helping with an activity, leading a group, or planning with a team. Consider the children’s ages, interests, and access needs before choosing an approach. Give their questions a place in the plan, and follow your program’s procedures.
Consult4Kids offers The Kids’ Program Toolkit as a free download, plus a free call.
Begin with the question the child is actually asking. Let them finish, then check that you understood. You might repeat the main idea in simple words and invite a correction. Avoid deciding too quickly that the question is only about getting the right answer. There may be a direction or step that is unclear.
Choose a response that fits the situation. You could ask what they have tried, show where information is located, or explain a direction again. Give the child room to take the next step where appropriate. Follow the program’s support procedures and respect any learning or access needs. Afterward, notice whether your response addressed the question. That observation can guide a later conversation with the team about how instructions are shared.
Check the approach with the adults responsible for the group. Explain what you observed and ask what fits the program plan. Keep your support suited to the child and the task, with room to adjust when needed.
Picture listening before deciding how to help. Before moving on, choose the question you want to keep in view. Write it in words that make sense to you. Set aside the details that can wait, and decide what information would help you take the next step with care.
