We hold men to exacting standards of accountability while excusing women for the same destructive conduct. Manipulation gets rebranded as “boss energy.” Emotional volatility becomes “passion.” Financial exploitation of partners gets celebrated as “knowing her worth.” This double standard does not protect women. It infantilizes them and harms everyone around them.

Social media amplifies this distortion daily. Content that mocks men for crying gets labeled toxic masculinity. Content that mocks men for paying bills gets labeled empowerment. A woman screaming at her partner in public goes viral as a “queen moment.” A man raising his voice in the same circumstance gets reported to HR or worse. The asymmetry is not subtle. It is structural.

Parental alienation offers the clearest example. Mothers who weaponize children against fathers during custody disputes are rarely named as abusers in mainstream discourse, even though courts and researchers including Dr. Denise Hines have documented this pattern extensively. Meanwhile fathers who raise concerns about alienation get dismissed as bitter or controlling. The behavior itself, using a child as a weapon, is abuse. It does not become less abusive because a woman commits it.

False accusations follow the same script. Making a false claim of domestic violence or sexual assault destroys lives. It should be named as the serious harm it is regardless of who commits it. Instead, our culture treats skepticism toward any female accuser as inherently suspect, which discourages the basic due process every person deserves.

None of this argues that women are uniquely toxic or that men are blameless. It argues for a single standard. Manipulation is manipulation. Cruelty is cruelty. Abuse is abuse. The sex of the person committing it does not change the nature of the act, and treating it as though it does insults women’s moral agency as much as it erases men’s suffering.

Real equality means real accountability, applied evenly, without flinching, regardless of who is uncomfortable hearing it.

Cooper Ledvina I’m aware that I have choice. However, I believe it’s helpful to push back on ignorant opinions, because they are so prevalent on social media and they affect people hugely. Especially younger people. We need to let the world know that reasoned minds exist too. This has impact.

I have made this point a few times myself. It seems often as though abusive behaviour from women is renamed and made acceptable, where men doing the same are called out for this. Comments like ‘if you can’t accept that I’m ….. then that’s your problem’ do not give me strong and independent vibes, they sound like bullying. Not acceptable from anyone.

Absolutely! Toxic behavior and abuse are never to be associated with only one gender. They are perpetrated by certain individuals across the gender spectrum.
