Transcript — YouTube panel (human-authored)
02 Hello, it’s David again. Hey, I was very excited last week to read that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is suing Mormon stories for um trademark infringement and brand confusion. And um in any case, I uh a couple of days ago, I read this really excellent article. There’s a lot of smoke and mirrors in an attempt to paint the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as some sort of big bad overwhelming giant corporation suing this poor little podcaster who’s just trying to do the right thing. But it’s just so far from the truth. So anyway, I just had it on my heart \[clears throat and snorts\] to share why Mormon Stories, the podcast Mormon Stories, and John Delin richly, richly, richly deserves to be sued. Okay. Um, I want to share this article briefly from Desireet News, my reaction to it, and and the title of the article, if you look at the thumbnail here, it’s analysis. The Church of Jesus Christ isn’t suing Mormon stories over the word
27 Mormon. There’s a lot more to it, and it’s simple and clear and entirely just richly justified. Uh, a look at the lawsuit. So, we’re going to take a quick look at that. And then I want to share uh a letter, a story. A woman by the name of Agnes sent me this letter about the false advertising of Mormon stories and how a faith crisis she ended up in ended up she ended up completely losing her faith and testimony and even her faith in God because of the influence of Mormon stories and how they falsely advertise what they’re doing. Okay. So, this is uh going to share the newspaper article, then Agnes’s story, and u I think you’ll find it really encouraging and informative. So, let’s just get right into it. Here’s the thumbnail. Why Mormon stories richly deserves to be sued. Agnes’ story exposes Mormon stories, false advertising, and then the deserate article analysis. The Church of Jesus Christ isn’t suing Mormon stories
38 over the word Mormon. A look at the lawsuit. So, let’s take a look at this wonderful article from Desireet News. Okay. Analysis. The Church of Jesus Christ isn’t suing Mormon stories over the word Mormon. A look at the lawsuit. Okay. A content creator and an IP, that’s intern u what is it? intellectual property attorney break down the church’s lawsuit against Mormon stories and the reality of brand confusion.
08 All right. And in this case, it’s deliberate and malicious brand confusion. Okay. So when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints publicly announced on Friday afternoon it had filed a lawsuit against the ex Mormon podcast Mormon Stories for trademark and copyright copyright infringement. The reaction was swift and intense. Some accused the church of trying to silence dissenting voices or trying to claim back the word Mormon. But this isn’t about silencing content or policing the word Mormon.
44 It’s about brand confusion. Reasonable people can disagree about where that line should be drawn, but the legal framework itself is not controversial. In our view, the core issue of this lawsuit is not that Mormon is in the name of Mormon stories. Rather, this lawsuit is fundamentally about two distinct but related problems. First, the trademark claims Mormon Stories has adopted branding, including its name, logo, color palette, and design elements that so closely mimics the church’s official visual identity, that viewers and listeners can’t tell the two apart, especially in the fast-paced way people consume podcasts. Second, the copyright claims. Per the federal complaint, Mormon Stories has repeatedly reproduced copyrighted church-owned photographs and artwork without permission in its promotional materials and video thumbnails for commercial use, which is rarely considered fair use. Together, this compounded use of media assets create what trademark lawyers call
51 likelihood of confusion. Likelihood of confusion. And this is deliberate. this uh John Dyn’s creation of this likelihood of confusion is absolutely deliberate. Okay, which he frankly admits at one point a legal standard concerning whether an ordinary consumer or viewer would mistakenly believe the content is affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the church. Over the years, as detailed in the lawsuit, Mormon Stories has utilized visual branding that is reminiscent of official church media. In December of 2022, John Delint, the podcast creator, switched from his brown logo to a blue one with a similar light rays design, making his logo similar to the church. Facebook commentators commenters immediately noticed, pointing out the resemblance to the LDS logo and the Book of Mormon branding. As the complaint states, the nearly indistinguishable nature of the blue Mormon Stories logo has been recognized by individuals commenting on Mormon Stories Facebook profile image.
59 Mormon Stories had coupled the new logo with church photos, matching fonts, and even Bertell Thorson’s Christis statue in its YouTube thumbnails and banners. Stack the colors, the imagery, and a name like Mormon stories, and this stops looking accidental. It’s not accidental. It’s absolutely not accidental and becomes intentionally confusing. Real commenters have expressed their confusion. For instance, the official legal complaint includes the following quotes. I stumbled upon the Mormon Stories podcast thinking it was church affiliated. I subscribed to his channel immediately thinking it was church affiliated. Very purposely deceptive.
40 The Lin has claimed, “We disagree with their allegations of confusion. Yet, in a Mormon stories episode from 2022, the podcast host acknowledged some degree of intent.” A guest told the Lynn, “Pretty quickly after my mission, I went to the podcast app, typed in Mormon, and saw Mormon stories, and I was like, perfect stories about Mormons. That’s not why I named it,” the podcaster responded. Okay, maybe it was a little bit why.
12 \[laughter\] Yeah, right. A little bit why. Yeah, right. Not at all. John Delin, the use it or lose it reality. The hard truth about intellectual property when Brittany drills into clients is this. If you don’t protect your trademarks, you lose them. Brand enforcement isn’t optional. It’s part of maintaining your rights and protecting consumers and viewers. Courts routinely look at whether a trademark owner has been consistent in policing its marks as evidence those marks still function as source identifiers. And Mormon has been a trademark of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1833. The church isn’t overreaching here. It’s doing exactly what trademark law expects and encourages. This also isn’t a targeted crackdown on the Lynn because he’s a loud critic. Church lawyers have also contacted faithful Latter-day Saint creators for infringing on copyrights and trademarks because the end problem is the same brand confusion.
23 The mediation and disclaimer. In a recent live stream, Delin revealed what he claims were the church’s unreasonable demands during mediation. According to him, they asked him to take Mormon out of the website domain and brand name, never initiate any future internet project using the word Mormon, renounce trademark rights to Mormon stories, promise never to challenge the church’s trademarks, and agree the church owns all the rights to the word Mormon. Well, we do. We do. Okay, the Dyn claims these were unreasonable demands and on their face they certainly are intense. Only those in the room can know what happened. But to anyone familiar with legal disputes, this reads as a classic process of negotiation. Each side starts with larger demands and eventually works towards a manageable concession in the middle. What was the final ask the church ultimately wanted? According to the church, it proposed a simple
22 solution. A brief disclaimer at the beginning of the podcast episodes, stating the content is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Delyn argues the church’s narrative is false because he did add disclaimer language to his podcast descriptions on platforms like Spotify, Apple, and YouTube. and at the bottom of his website. However, the church has requested a quote simple disclaimer at the beginning of podcast episodes, either verbally or in writing, acknowledging that Mormon stories is not affiliated with the church. The Lynn has refused, stating, “We don’t want our primary message to be about what we are not.” Importantly, people often don’t read podcast fine print at the bottom of show notes. They hit play in the car, on a walk, at the gym. A 5-second audio disclaimer at the beginning of the episode not affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints actually reaches listeners. To combound the issue, the legal complaint details
26 how during mediation, the defendants assured the church they would remove the church’s copyrighted images from their website and social media pages and would not use copyrighted images in the future. Yet, as the complaint notes, days later, Mormon stories used a copyrighted image of a church temple to advertise a new podcast episode. Continually ignoring those boundaries makes legal escalation almost inevitable.
55 Building on your own intellectual property land claims he has used Mormon stories name for more than 20 years without objection and points out the church has distanced itself from the term Mormon. While President Russell M. Nelson strongly encouraged members to emphasize the full proper name of the church to center its Christian identity. The church has not abandoned its trademarks. They still actively hold and protect trademarks for Mormon Book of Mormon stories, Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and Mormon Channel. When Dunkin Donuts rebranded Dun to Duncan in 2019, that branding shift did not mean the company abandoned its trademarks rights to the full name. If a competitor opened a Dunkin’ Donuts tomorrow, the company would have to sue and it would win. A pivot in how you identify yourself is not the same thing as giving up your legal rights. The church’s decision to emphasize its full name does not mean the Mormon marks are up for grabs. A
56 voluntary rebrand would be the cleanest path forward for the Open Stories Foundation. Changing the name would undoubtedly involve friction, but copying the branding of an institution you oppose isn’t a sustainable legal strategy. I got to read this one again. Changing the name of Mormon stories, which is their legal name is the Open Stories Foundation. It would involve friction, but copying the branding of an institution you oppose is not a sustainable legal strategy. Okay.
32 Build on intellectual property land that you actually own. Rebrands are tough, but they’re a chance to reset, sharpen your positioning, and tell your story. Your story, not someone else’s. This way, you can build a distinct and independent brand that no one can question. Okay? But of course, John Delin doesn’t want to do that because he actually deliberately crafted the image of his podcast to draw in people who did not know that they were uh going into something that is actually the spirit of it is utterly opposed to the spirit and truth of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He likes the brand confusion. He’s built his very successful uh lucrative business on this foundation of brand confusion.
34 Deliberate malicious brand confusion. Okay. So anyway, that’s I thought that was a wonderful article and just in case any of you missed it, I wanted to share that. And um now we’re going to go straight into this wonderful letter that Agnes sent me. And and she sent me this about two years ago, but this is it’s just wonderful. It just shows how very richly just to u go back to this.
09 It shows how very richly Mormon stories deserves to be sued. Okay. And I just say all these things. Let’s see. Where’s that? Where’s that thumbnail? Here we go. Why Mormon stories richly deserves to be sued. Agnes’ story exposes Mormon stories false advertising. That’s what we’re going to go into right now. I hope you enjoy this and find it edifying. And uh please if you find Agnes’s if you find this podcast helpful, please like, subscribe, hit the notification notification bell.
50 But above all, you you’ll see in Agnes’s story how damaging and destructive this is that people get pulled into this anti stuff such as Mormon stories. If you know anybody that would benefit from hearing Agnes’ story or hearing this article that I just shared, please, please, please pass this on. Okay? Send somebody a link to it. Send your friends, send your relatives, anybody that’s struggling with this kind of stuff, please send them a link. Send them a link. Send them the link to the podcast.
28 And I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Enjoy Agnes’s story. See you again soon. Good morning. It’s David again. I have a very wonderful story to share with you today. It’s Agnes’ story. This was sent to me. I received it this morning. And um you know the title of this video, long title, watching anti- Mormon propaganda, Mormon stories, CES. For informed consent and a look at where you are headed, watch this video of Agnes’s story. Beware of Mormon stories, false advertising.
23 Okay, what am I talking about here? Mormon stories. I I find Mormon stories very irritating because they’re thumbnails show up in my feed all the time, even though I never watch any of the Mormon stories podcast. But all of this anti- Mormon stuff, the level of false advertising is profound. Okay? Because this is how they present it. This is a this is a typical This is a typical couple that just in Mormon stories false narrative. They just finally were set free by discarding their faith, their false faith and and leaving this false oppressive church. And now they’re out, you know, skipping through the fields and filled with peace and joy and everything is hunky dory. Okay, here’s a typical uh couple on a Mormon story thumbnail. Okay, let’s see. There they are. Oh, finally righteousness, peace, and joy has descended upon them because they threw their Mormon faith in the trash where it belongs. And now they’re happy, happy, happy, happy, happy.
48 Wouldn’t you like to be happy like that? Wouldn’t you like to be happy like that? Of course you would. Of course you would. It’s absolute garbage, man. \[laughter\] You know, gosh, it’s it’s so But you know what? People are taking in. Do do you know why there’s a there’s a a saying, it pays to advertise? Because advertising works. Images affect your perception of things. And the best example of this that I can think of is cigarette advertising. When I was a boy, I grew up with the Marao man and P, you know, pioneer stories of the rugged west. I mean, my my family heritage, my family farm is in western Montana. My brother is there right now raising uh black Angus cattle and uh growing wheat and alalfa. And um my great-grandparents homesteaded that place in 1874.
48 So of course, you know, I have this like pioneer heritage. And so, you know, I’m I’m growing up as a boy and the Marbor man, I was like, “Come to where the flavor is. Come to Marbor country.” And of course it would show, you know, this ruggedly handsome cowboy, you know, just just, you know, like a Louis Lewis Lamore image of this rugged individualism, this self-made man that can overcome all obstacles in the elements and he has peace and uh joy and a and a mar a pack of marorrow in his shirt pocket and one hanging from his lip, you know. And by the time I was uh 14 years old, I was smoking marbar. I mean, when I was a boy, I was like, gosh, I’ll never smoke. That’s so stupid. By the time I’m 14 years old, I was smoking cigarettes. And, you know, smoking like a pack and then a pack of half a pack and a half a day. What brand do you think I was smoking, man? I was smoking Marbros. I wanted to be like him. That was the image that I associated with smoking. Okay. So,
54 here’s here’s this all this anti- Mormon propaganda that is trying to destroy the childlike faith of the saints trying to destroy their trust in their incredible united apostolic and prophetic leadership. It’s like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the leadership and the understanding, the vastness. It’s mind-boggling how glorious it’s the most beautiful thing on earth. But of course, it’s easiest thing in the world to get dull to the glory of what we have or not even really necessarily understand the glory of what we have if we’re raised in it anymore than a fish understands the glory of water. It’s just they’ve been in water all their life and they just take it completely for granted. Well, I think a lot of people it can be the same way. But uh the reality is is that uh you know the church is glorious but there’s all the this anti- Mormon propaganda painting the church as something that is uh horrible and
08 oppressive and if you really want to be happy you should just leave and then you’ll be happy like those people I just showed you that that’s the presentation of Mormon stories and the other associated ated anti- Mormon propaganda out there that’s aimed at causing Mormons to lose causing the Latter-day Saints to lose their love and appreciation for the church. And it’s particularly aimed at at people that are are struggling a bit. They have questions. Uh they they’re their testimony is not real strong maybe. But in in whatever case, what’s presented is leave the church and everything will be fine. You’ll be happy, you know, and uh you know, it’s the reality is uh it’s just an absolute lie. It’s false advertising.
02 It’s just totally false advertising. And Agnes sent me her story today and I just think her story is absolutely wonderful because what it does is it shows if if you’re uh watching anti- Mormon propaganda or if you know anyone who is, you know, maybe your husband is on the internet just drinking this stuff up or you know your daughter, your son or you know somebody that’s lost their faith or is in the process of losing their faith. because they’re gobbling this stuff up and they’re being influenced.
39 Uh I I wish that they would pass a law, you know, making there be truth in advertising for this anti- Mormon propaganda. What’s happened in Australia? In Australia, hardly anybody smokes anymore. You know why? There is no advertising permitted for cigarettes. And every cigarette pack sold not only can’t have their own beautiful pictures like of the Marbor man or even a nice red and white package. They all have to have on the front basically a color color photograph of somebody dying of cancer from smoking cigarettes, you know, or losing their toes or just just the horrible problems that can result from that habit. They have a big color photo and then you know smoking kills you through cancer or smoking kills it can cause you to go blind. It can cause this it can cause that. And so everybody that buys a pack of cigarettes that’s the image that they get. And you know what positive ad advertising that is a
49 lie works. Negative advertising that’s true works. Uh advertising is just effective. You know what the images that you see affect how you view things. And so hardly anybody smokes here. But really, I want to put some truth in advertising because when I first uh found my eyes just 13 months ago, my eyes for the first time in an in a life of seeking the kingdom of God on earth, my eyes were finally opened to the glory of the restoration. And I was just like I was like, this is so beautiful.
26 It’s so beautiful. It’s so beautiful, man. It’s so beautiful. The restoration of the church, the prophet Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, the structure and organization of the church, the quality of the leadership, the incredible living scripture that comes through the apostles and prophets, the their understanding of drawing out of the treasure house of newer and older scripture and combining that with current revelation. It’s stunning. The whole thing is stunning. It’s it’s absolutely stunning, you know, and um you know, I just uh I just absolutely fell in love with the church. And uh one of the things that is really amazing to me is I I started putting up these podcasts because I saw from these anti- Mormon videos that evangelical friends sent to me just how how much slander there was. And so I started putting these videos up just just to shout from the housetops the glory of the restored
32 church and and uh to try to poke holes in this mist of darkness and accusatory fog that had kept it hidden from me for 47 years of seeking as an adult in nonlatter-day saint Christianity. And I I started getting all these letters and emails from people, you know, saying, “Do you know, do you have informed consent about what you’re getting involved in? Do you really understand? Do you understand the dark roots of what you’re allowing yourself to participate in? We’re And then, of course, they didn’t say it. They’re like, it was more like, you know, we’re really concerned for you.
15 It’s wonderful what you think you found, but do you have informed consent? We’re just concerned. We’re concerned for you that you really need to understand the origins and the dark roots of what you’ve allowed yourself to get involved in because we care about you. And this this is like false compassion at its worst. But the spirit that’s behind it, of course, is do you understand the dark roots of what you’re involved in, you know? It’s it’s just it’s straight from the pit of hell, man. And it’s it’s absolute lies. It’s absolute lies. And of course, like all effective lies, they they take little bits of truth and paint paint everything in the worst possible light and pretend the worst possible speculation with the worst possible motives is actual fact. And it’s just like it’s so bad. It’s so bad.
16 the the the false the falsity with which the falsity and horrible slander with which the most beautiful thing on earth is painted is the worst of false advertising. And the only thing that compares to it is stuff like what I just showed you, you know, where they just have this couple that cast away their their burdensome faith in this evil church and they’re just, “Oh, we’re so happy now. We’re so happy now.
50 You should come join us. We’ll be a happy family together out here in the world where you know you don’t you don’t have to carry the burden of thinking anything’s true that might require you to deny yourself a little bit. Just forget about that. Just come out here and be free with us. We’re so happy. Would you like to be happy with us? We’ll be your new family. All these happy people that have left the church.
16 It just makes me sick, man. It makes me absolut absolutely sick. So this is all this is all my introduction. But the the hero of this is Agnes because Agnes has pulled the veil aside from this garbage false advertising and told us what it’s really like. Which is why the title of this video is watching anti- Mormon propaganda, Mormon stories, CES for informed consent. real informed consent, not the lie informed consent that these anti were trying to pedal to me when I first fell in love with all of you and with Joseph Smith in the Book of Mormon and the restoration. Not that lying false uh informed consent, but true informed consent. And if you want to look at where you’re headed, or maybe you’re already there, watch this video and share it with as many people as you can. And if you’re not a subscriber, please hit subscribe.
22 And if you haven’t, if if you’re subscribing, make sure you hit the little bell for notifications. If you’ve already subscribed, but you haven’t hit notifications, hit notifications and then whenever I put something up, you’re notified. Okay. So, anyway, if you want real informed consent and an honest look at where you may well be headed if you keep on, you know, you can’t drink from a foul spring and a sweet spring at the same time. If you or someone you know is drinking from the foul output of this anti- Mormon propaganda like Mormon stories and CES, this what I’m going to read now is very likely where you’re headed and maybe where you already are. So, with no further ado, I’m going to read Agnes’s story that she sent to me this morning.
24 All right. Agnes writes, “I want to tell you my story.” Hi, David. I’ve watched your videos and really like the messages you’ve been sharing. I want you to know you’re really doing the Lord’s work and especially in warning people about Mormon stories by John Dalen. He’s definitely on a mission on the behalf of the enemy of our souls. I left the church completely in the beginning of 2021 because of my faith crisis while reading saints volume 1 and two. A lot of the stories brought up a lot of doubts that I had had and I went down a slippery path of finding out more about the lives of the people and it just made me angry and sad at the same time when I read everything I could find online.
22 Because of my anger towards Heavenly Father for allowing all the suffering of women and children, I just couldn’t let go of my anger and disappointment. So I just read more and more of the stories online that now I know are rumors that were spread and people just kept up making up making up stories and gossiping as they were going. I read the CES letter, letter to my wife, and then I found out Mormon stories thinking, and then I found out Mormon stories thinking that they would help me understand those things that I read. But it was completely the opposite. They are determined to get people to lose their testimony, doubt the truth, and be angry at anything and anyone in the church. I was out of the church and was feeling very lonely without any friends.
11 because everyone I knew were members of the church and I didn’t want to associate with them anymore and I also knew that the conversations would only lead them to try to bring me back. I found out there was an ex Mormon group where I lived in southern Utah. So I started going to those meetings which they usually did on Sundays at the local parks so the kids could play and the adults could talk and meet each other. At first it seemed like a good group. very similar stories to mine. Most of them left just like I did from a faith crisis that turned into bitterness over church history. And like me, these people were not trying to leave to do fun things, but because we lost our testimony through studying difficult parts of church history. The more I went to those meetings, the more I didn’t feel good about them. The people were talking so much trash about the people in church that it made me feel uncomfortable. And also because they left, they were swearing a lot, which I really don’t
12 like. To them, it seemed like they could do everything now since they’re not following any commandments. The worst thing is most of us who lost the testimony of the true church also lost faith in God. I simply couldn’t believe anymore in anything. Most of the people who left the church over losing their testimony, they let go of everything that keeps them clean and moral. All decency goes out the window and they want to follow everything trendy and popular. I didn’t like being around them and bringing my children to the park meetings after a few times. The way they spoke with so much anger and disgust made me think a lot about the people in the building in Lehi’s dream. During one of those meetings, I met John Dalen. He was visiting and when I talked to him, he knew my name and where I was from, which was really strange because I never told him anything. And I was surprised in an eerie way that he knew about me.
13 He was also cold, like a very strange person. I felt an uneasy feeling about him. Even though I was out of the church and wanting to be part of the ex Mormon group, there’s a lot of darkness in him. And I could feel it. Even then, I noticed that I was becoming like them, hostile, hateful, and just bitter about everything and everyone in the church. I recognized that and stopped going. I tried to be myself, but felt very conflicted because somehow I felt that everything I was doing was wrong even though I didn’t believe in it. I couldn’t enjoy doing the wrong things. I felt a fog fog of darkness around me that I couldn’t escape. I wasn’t happy. I felt like I could do whatever I wanted, but there was no joy.
03 The scripture in the Book of Mormon kept coming to my mind saying, “Wickedness was never happiness.” And every time I remembered that, I tried to brush it off. I felt torn. I literally felt part of me wanted to do some bad things and the other part wanted to be a good person. I tried to be a good person, but I still felt miserable no matter how good I was trying to be. My family and I moved on July 2022 to another state for my husband’s new job, and I felt like it was a fresh start away from all the Mormon’s influence.
41 Isn’t that amazing? So, If you cast from you and sit in judgment, you Jesus specifically, Jesus Christ specifically taught with emphasis, “Judge not, lest you be judged. For with the measure ye judge, it shall be measured back to you.” These people, they they allow themselves to be drawn by this spirit of Satan, the accusatory spirit to sit in judgment of the church and its leaders and people in the church and the teachings of they allow themselves to sit in judgment of things that they have no authority to judge and cast off the only place on earth where they can know what’s true. the only city that truly has foundations, the only place that’s built on the foundation of apostles and prophets with Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone.
44 And they get out there and if you’re one of the one out of 500 people that has the glorious privilege of being in the true church where you can actually know what’s true and you despise that and cast it from you. What’s measured to you is you won’t be able to know anything is true which of course is a recipe for nihilism and despair ultimately. Okay. Now truth in advertising the Bible says plainly there is pleasure in sin for a season. Okay.
17 But what do you do? Like she she could just do whatever she wanted but she’d do it and there was no joy. No happiness. No real happiness there. There’s pleasure in sin for a season. It’s fun for a time. And then what do you do when doing your own will isn’t fun anymore. When gobbling up the things of the world and the ways of the world isn’t fun anymore. Now what do you do? All right.
42 Because you have you have no access to truth. You have no access to the spirit of truth, the Holy Ghost. You have no access to real joy. You’ve cast away the one solid place to stand on the face of the whole earth. This is what you end up with is either being alone or foul fellowship. Foul fellowship based on on uh bitterness, anger, mocking. I mean th this woman’s description of the fruit of leaving the church is so powerful. This is truth in advertising.
20 This is truth in advertising. I really hope Agnes will agree to come on uh and I can interview her. I’d love to interview her about this. But fortunately, the story has a happy ending. Okay. So anyway, her family, she says, “The scripture in the Book of Mormon kept coming to my mind saying wickedness was never happiness.” I’ll just read a little from a little bit earlier. She says, “I tried to be myself but felt very conflicted because somehow I felt everything I was doing was wrong even though I didn’t believe in it. I couldn’t enjoy doing the wrong things. I felt the fog of darkness around me that I couldn’t escape. I wasn’t happy. I felt like I could do whatever I wanted, but there was no joy.” The scripture in the Book of Mormon kept coming to my mind saying, “Wickedness was never happiness.” And every time I remembered that, I tried to brush it off. I felt torn. I literally felt part of me wanted to do bad things and the other part wanted to be a good person. I tried to be a good person, but I still felt miserable no matter how
27 good I was trying to be. My family and I moved on July 2022 to another state for my husband’s new job, and I felt like it was a fresh start away from all the Mormon’s influence. Then this happened. This is my experience straight from my journal. On January 7th, 2023, I was in my kitchen. I had just finished washing the dishes when I heard a voice telling me to listen to the general conference, the most recent talks. So, I went looking on YouTube to see what they have said about the people who have left the church. Well, I listened to the first talk I saw there that made me want to listen to it. It was overcome the world and find rest from Russell M. Nelson.
10 His words about finding rest and peace in Christ really touched me in a very intense way. Listening to him talking felt like a really good best friend. While he talked about the temple, it made so much sense to me. Even though I’ve been out of the church for almost two years, I was looking for ways to be happy and where I belong in this world. But there’s so much turmoil turmoil and despair everywhere I turned. The temple is the only place for refuge. Like he said, the temple is the only place on earth you can actually escape the world, not just physically. I felt his words with so much peace and heartfelt love. I was thinking how I missed the church and family community. I knew back when I was in the church that I wasn’t alone. I was thinking how the church gave me a safe place of belonging that I can’t find anywhere else. Since leaving the church, I felt so alone and depressed. Then I listened to the talk Christ heals that which was broken by Amy A. Wright. It was so inspiring and it opened my heart
10 even more. It’s \[clears throat\] hard to explain after leaving the church and being angry at the leaders and everyone and everything. How can I be touched and feel their words as true and sincere words from Jesus to me after everything I have done? I literally refused and rejected all the blessings that were given to me and got rid of all my things that were from the church when I was angry. I was really angry at God for a long time because of all the things that I found out about the history of the church. I shut down and didn’t believe in anything anymore for a while. Last month, I started to feel that without Jesus, there is no Christmas. And if I believe in Jesus, then there must be a God, heavenly father. I prayed a few times since I left the church, begging and asking God if he is real and to tell me if there’s a right path back to him, if there’s a way for me to feel his presence. He’s talking to me again. I
00 think because I finally was open to accept his words because my heart was softened. I could listen to him again. He is real. I was wrong about everything that I found out about the church two years ago. I really thought the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wasn’t true. I was convinced. I didn’t believe anymore. I let go of my faith and everything that I held sacred to me.
24 Today, I heard words coming to my mind that I know wasn’t my own. I guess you can say they were the Holy Ghost. the spirit, Jesus, or God. All I know is they weren’t my own. It was telling me I should listen to the general conference, the most recent messages, and I did, which is strange because I never wanted to do anything like that, especially since being out of the church. Now I’m here ashamed of my past actions, and I deeply regret throwing away my blessings. In Amy’s talk, she spoke about the parable of the prodigal son. I understand now more than ever it was never about the prodigal son’s wasting his life and money but about how he lost his spiritual gifts and blessings when he left his father God. He ended up sad and alone and afraid just like I felt.
13 This experience today was surreal. Realizing all my sins was the hardest part. How I regret my bad influence on my family. I should have never left my place in the church. I had so much support and everyone was like family to me. It wasn’t easy to leave and it’s not easy to return either. But I’m very grateful he wants me back. That’s amazing. Isn’t that amazing? Absolutely amazing. Agnes, I just thank our heavenly father and his son Jesus Christ for you.
56 So Agnes continues, “So this is my story of how I left the church and how Heavenly Father’s mercies and tender love brought me back. I felt incredibly loved while listening to President Nelson’s talk. I felt like he was right there in the same room with me talking directly to me and all I could feel was a confirmation of truth of his words and at the same time immense love for me and that heavenly father was talking through him. That experience was on Saturday early afternoon and I was repenting for the rest of that day and thanking heavenly father for that experience that woke me up from the darkness. The next day was Sunday and I told my husband I would go. We went to the church and it was fast and testimony meeting. As soon as I walked in, I heard the hymn, Come Thou, Font of Every Blessing, playing, which is my favorite hymn. I started balling and felt so good to be there. After a few people shared their testimony, I felt my heart beating, pounding like I had never
11 felt before. It was like my heart was going to break out of my chest, and I knew I had to get up and share my testimony. As soon as I was up there on the pulpit and started sharing my experience the day before, I felt peace and the whole room was quiet. I was able to share my whole experience of the prior day and I felt peace while sharing my testimony and even more confirmation that the church is true and God and Jesus Christ are real and they love each one of us very much. I’m still firm in the church and waiting for my temple blessings to be restored so I can be authorized to return to the temple. And I’m feeling tempted more and more each day because I’m getting close to be able to go to the temple. I know the opposition forces are real and they’re trying to keep us from eternal happiness. Don’t ever give up. That’s what I keep reminding myself. If temptations and others are attacking
06 your faith strongly, it’s because you are doing the right things. Stay strong, friend, and keep sharing your testimony. Agnes, my word. Isn’t that amazing? See her story of what she what she experienced when she left the church. That’s truth in advertising. This this is not truth in advertising. This is the Marbor man. All right. But what does what it doesn’t show is the spiritual cancer that sets in and and really a path to death because as as the scripture says it says that uh every man’s way is right in his own eyes but the end thereof are the ways of death.
08 So really, there you go. In any case, that’s just a marvelous, marvelous testimony. And when I read that, I was like, this needs to get out to the world. So, so people that are in the process of see you are what you eat, you know, you notice what happened to her when she started listening the Mormon stories and she said, “I I read everything out there. Listen to everything out there.
51 Everything out there is 95% garbage.“ Okay? It It’s like garbage in, garbage out. You want to destroy your soul, you want to lose your faith, just listen to everything out there. It, you know, so much of this comes down to the simple wisdom that is in Lehi’s dream. you know, she ends up in this foul fellowship and she realizes that she’s living Lehi’s dream, that the voices of these ex Mormons that are her new family, that she’s in the great spacious building with the mockers, with the arrogant, proud, bitter, we’re so glad we know better, but we hate ourselves and hate each other.
34 That’s her new family is is all of these people in the great spacious building. And she recognizes that. Good for her. You know, she had some discernment and some some sense left. But it’s just um it’s amazing really you know the the story that she tells because this is this is really what happens if you cast aside the one place on earth where you can know what’s true and the one place on earth where you can really uh have oneness re genuine oneness of spirit with other human beings because the holy ghost is actually there on the covenant path and you cast that aside and where do you end up you know you end up where she ended up one way or another. And if if you’re hard-hearted enough, of course, you can find a way to enjoy the pleasure of sin for a season, but ultimately it does the scripture does say there’s pleasure in sin for a season, but the end thereof are the ways of death. It says that in the book of Proverbs.
36 So, in any case, I am so thankful, Agnes, for your wonderful story. And if I can get at it without knocking over my drinks, I’d like to play a song about this. Let’s see here. See if I can find Here we go. See Agnes. I I lost my train of thought there. Um the fundamental thing is so simple from Lehi’s dream. They heeded them not. For as many as heeded them fell away. So who’s they?
31 It’s all these voices of the world and the non-Christian world and all of the apostates and follows. those who as Jesus spoke of in Matthew 24:14 when he said that uh in in Matthew 24 he said that times of great peril would come men would betray one another and hate one another and because lawlessness would abound the love of many would grow cold but he that endures to the end shall be saved so we’re in this time so those who betray one another and hate one another are the John Delins and those who allow themselves to listen to John Dalon and people like him as their pied piper and they are led away from the truth.
15 They’re led off of the highway of holiness. They’re led off of the covenant path and they end up out in the world and they try to have they try to have fellowship. But the only fellowship available to them is foul fellowship. just oh just a fellowship of bitterness and uh arrogance and pride you know and lust and greed and just gobbling up the things of the world that uh are not uh that don’t build people up you know so but then Agnes woke up and it’s amazing how after all of that listening to all of that garbage from Mormon stories and CES and all that kind of stuff and it it just destroyed her and led her out into the darkness where the only possible togetherness or fellowship she had was disgusting, do you know and destructive.
20 Then then she listens she listens to overcome the world and find rest of the words of our beloved prophet sir and revelator President Russell and Nelson. She’s like oh oh this is like pure and true and beautiful and this it’s all true. This man loves me. Heavenly father loves me. Jesus Christ loves me. What did I do? you know, one conference talk man raised her from the dead. Do you know it’s like if if you’re listening to this anti- Mormon propaganda from the pit of hell and not listening to conference talks, you you’re basically like taking a tablespoon of arsenic every day and not eating any healthy food. It’s like you’re gonna die. So wake up, man. Just stop listening to Mormon stories or, you know, any of this CES stuff or any of this accusatory stuff, apology, anything that tears down the most beautiful thing on earth. Stop listening to that garbage. I plead with you and and uh wake up. Start listening to conference talks and feasting on the words of Christ every day and repent. Get back on
42 the covenant path. And then once you’re back there, repent daily and keep repenting and keep repenting and keep feasting on the words of Christ and keep listening to conference talks and you’ll regain your test. Go back to church, man. Go back to sacrament meeting like this precious Agnes sister did and and testify and repent publicly and you know find the righteous, peace and joy that’s your heritage.
10 you know, you you can go back. Just because you left doesn’t mean you can’t go back. And if you’ve started down this path and and you haven’t yet left, you can just repent and and stop listening. Says they heeded them not. They did not listen to those dark choir of voices as Elder Corb so aptly terms them. They did not listen to the voices from the great and spacious building at all. They didn’t go on YouTube and and turn to the Great Spacious Building channel, Mormon Stories, and say, “Okay, well, this is my new daily bread.” It’s it’s like, you know, what you feed on it. It Paul specifically promises this.
57 He says, “He who sws to the flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but he who sws to the spirit shall of the spirit reap everlasting life.” So every decision you make as to what you’re going to listen to, you listen to the voices of those that don’t have joy but pretend to know better and have all this secret knowledge that the church has hidden from you. Okay? You listen to those people. You listen to those people, you are feeding unbelief and despair. You’re feeding your flesh. And uh if you listen to the conference talks and trust the prophet, trust the quorum of 12 and the prophets uh counselors and trust trust all those in the church that have strong testimonies and and just hold on just get on the high highway of holiness and and hold on to one another and hold on to the prophet man and we’ll all get there.
59 Okay. Well, guess actually \[music\] is the only true church. More times than I can count, I heard slander \[music\] spoken against like it was absolute gospel truth and impossible to refute. But the truth is \[music\] is that you’re believing that the most beautiful thing on earth is \[music\] a cult and that only a fool would believe otherwise. And that’s why that’s why it took me till I’m 68 years old, man, to even \[music\] take the ark of God, you know, the holy city, the church of Jesus Christ restored on the earth with true apostles and prophets, the most beautiful men to follow on the whole planet to even look at them and give them a listen. It took me 47 years.
44 \[music\] I spent 47 years \[music\] trying to find what was right there in front of me. President Nelson promised us that we would see the greatest manifestations of the Savior’s power that the world has ever seen. He will bestow countless privileges, blessings, and miracles upon the faithful. This man finding the restored gospel truths that he’s been seeking for 47 years is one of those miracles. And there are millions of people out there just like David, honest seekers of truth, who are only \[music\] kept from the truth because they know not where to find it. Lost in the accusatory fog, as David puts it, not even thinking to give Latter-day Saints a serious thought. But we know where to find it. We are enjoying the fruits of it. The question is, are we sharing it?
