Researchers just discovered a major gap in AI models that affects 75% of the world’s population, and reveals a stunning bias against an unexpected group of people.

75% of the world’s population is some kind of religious, so a consortium of universities (including Baylor, Notre Dame, Yeshiva, Brigham Young University) got together to run a study on how often religion shows up in AI responses.

When they asked a variety of models some very targeted questions, most of the models never brought up religion where a human would expect some kind of religious or faith-informed response.

But that wasn’t the shocking part, these companies are highly secular.

But what was even more shocking to me was which religion they were most biased against.

To find out this religious bias, the study asked the models about what they thought of converting to a specific religion.

It was most negatively biased against Jehovah’s Witnesses by a large margin.

I see this as a major red flag for AI to be so disproportionately biased against a single religion.

On average, AI models seemed to have a negative bias towards Latter-day Saints as well.

Keep this in mind when you’re relying on AI as the source of all truth. There’s a good chance it has an unfair bias against some of your deeply held beliefs.
