What I Wore, Bought and Sewed In January (+December)

For those of you new subscribers: although I usually cover social dynamics and culture, I enjoy writing about fashion a few times a month. To wrap up each month, I like to cover my favorite outfits, buys and sewing projects of the month (yes, I sew! I sew a lot! Way too much, honestly.) If you’re curious about what I wore, bought and sewed, keep scrolling. If this isn’t your thing, rest assured there will be non-fashion content coming tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day.
Before I get to the fits, I wanted to update you all on the very serious hair color situation that some of you have been eagerly monitoring with bated breath. Last time I wrote about my hair, I was fixing an accidental Goth-black dye job and wound up with a much softer dark brown. See, original accidental black:

Faded black (with giant golden brown patch), then the aftermath of my multi-step DIY hair fix, covered [here](https://www.cartoonshateher.com/p/what-i-did-to-milfmaxx). Yes, I know you “can’t tell the difference.” Well, I CAN.
s_!Md7q!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fd057aa54-f9e0-4d5a-ac85-f2cf20a43441_1051x997.jpeg)
Well, ultimately I decided I wanted to go much lighter (but stay in the realm of brunette) so I waited a couple months, touched up my roots with Wella 7NN and then bleached everything that was darker than my new 7NN growth. TLDR, now it’s a fun light-medium reddish brown:
Ignoring the 2019 styles, this is still basically true
As we enter a new year, I’ve started to think about my fashion goal for the year. I am not even bothering with any silly “Don’t buy anything all year” resolution because: LOL. However, I did want to think about what I’m buying, because I have a tendency to buy things that I think are cool but never wear, because I really like them as isolated art pieces, not as clothes.
I’ve had vague “fashion goals” for different years. In 2024, I basically wanted to start dressing like myself again after having a baby, and I leaned really hard into excessively formal Chanel-inspired co-ord sets, pastels and heels, but realistically, loungewear most of the time. I did try to shoehorn the formal stuff into my everyday life, but this meant having a mental breakdown while trying to drag a petulant three-year-old and whining infant to an Easter brunch on a rainy day, just so I could wear a pastel tweed suit. Oh, the sacrifices I so selflessly make.
In 2025, I moved away from athleisure but also felt a little embarrassed by how costumey and Barbie-ish my wardrobe had become. I wanted to go a little more classic, take fewer risks, and dress better for my body type and age. I shopped at a lot at Aritzia. Sounds boring, but I do think my 2025 outfits (especially autumn onwards) were a lot better than my 2024 outfits. (Also, this could just be the linear passage of time posing as a phony “fashion evolution” sooo…)

*Fall 2025. This was good.*
So what is 2026’s goal? I think I’m just trying to dress…cooler. Trying less hard (aka, trying even *harder*, secretly, but hoping nobody will notice.) I also need to tone down my Emily-in-Parisness. I don’t want to be *mistaken* for a member of Gen Z, and I don’t think it would happen anyway, but I would rather not be as millennial-coded as mason jars and cheeky brunch restaurants named with BDSM-inspired puns. I understand this fashion transition means occasionally I will deviate from the [male gaze](https://www.cartoonshateher.com/p/the-male-gaze-is-uncool), but as much as I love dressing in a flattering way, having “can everyone see the curve of my ass” front and center all the time is…well, a bit boring. Anyway, since I don’t follow any fashion influencers or really…*know anything* about fashion, I don’t know where to start, and my best option is just looking at lots of Dakota Johnson street style for vague inspiration (although just keeping it real, I would never wear the far-right jeans—my goal isn’t to 100% copy her, but inject *some* of this into my style.)
s_!WU7P!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2dfa8708-67d2-4546-b0e6-642ce8e3c189_1500x1125.jpeg)
Anyway, for those of you who just wanted to see outfit photos, sorry for that yapping. They’re coming.
First, outfits of December, including some holiday fits.
For a while I’ve wanted to pair my new Vagabond mary jane heels with matching red tights, and I thought these Sheertex ones were perfect. They are slightly different, which I find a bit unnerving, but I figured they were close enough. I also used a hair tie to secure my belt around my waist without the excess leather flapping around—one of you suggested it, I forget who (thank you.) For those curious, the jacket is one of my favorite blazer cuts of all time, the Standout Blazer from Aritzia.

More holiday cheer, in the form of my Self Portrait suit, which is shamefully the same design/brand as a dress worn by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, which I wrote about [here](https://www.cartoonshateher.com/p/ive-been-wearing-a-maga-dress). I wore this for a fancy holiday lunch with a friend and our daughters. The shoes are [Vivaia](https://www.vivaia.com/item/arabella-p_10028648.html?gid=10028654) and the bag is Self Portrait as well.
s_!WwKf!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fca1db820-a780-437e-a645-d30a30d984d9_1001x1998.jpeg)
Now, for something a bit more casual. This is probably my favorite-ever sweater, and in hindsight it’s too short to pair with leggings but I just didn’t have many opportunities to wear real clothes this month, so in the words of my son’s Pre-K teacher, “you get what you get and you don’t get upset.” Anyway, it’s the black sheep sweater, inspired by the one worn by Princess Diana, from Rowing Blazers. The boots are a very old Aquatalia style that I also got second hand.

I also got sick *right before Christmas* so while initially I was hoping to pull out some cute festive outfit, this was the best I could muster for Christmas Eve at my in-laws’ house, and I changed as soon as I got home. But, for the brief period of time that I wore it, I really enjoyed this [Rachel Antonoff](https://rachelantonoff.com/products/clara-cardigan-tartan?variant=41638892863553&country=US¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=23193958509&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23193962604&gbraid=0AAAAABw2mtokiV6xDOHcyT4WHCiun8kMQ&gclid=Cj0KCQiAx8PKBhD1ARIsAKsmGbdmdGiIKkFXKTFv0sS3xW3Vcv-qsMHLavp4Rdg1fZeW-9Kdz8xAzEQaAnd6EALw_wcB) sweater.
s_!I2Pj!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9be3d03f-e5e1-4234-b3da-ddd422e59f5a_863x1853.jpeg)
And for New Year’s Eve this year, we had no shot of going to a party (or finding childcare so we could attend a hypothetical one) so we decided to do a fancy daytime lunch with our kids instead. I wore this Alessandra Rich tweed suit which has always been my go-to for fancy daytime outings.

Now, January. For a weekend lunch with the family I wore a black twill mini skirt I sewed (more on that in the Sewing Projects section) with black cotton knit tights, the Aritzia Morningside [blazer](https://www.aritzia.com/us/en/product/morningside-blazer/127300.html?color=1274), and just when I thought it all looked a bit *too* black, I added an APC animal print bag and Franco Sarto burgundy [flats](https://www.bestenthusiast.com/product-p-214200.html). (Ignore what looks like a big white patch on my leg. That’s a stain on the mirror from my chid licking it.)
s_!dwOO!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2615ffa3-554a-474f-b0e8-9dc3c8c95ef3_406x888.png)
Plus coat:

For a date night with my husband, I dug this old Le Kilt skirt out of my closet and paired with my second hand moto boots from Aquatalia. I love these boots but am majorly struggling to find things with which to pair them. I think this one worked. Open to new ideas!
s_!Fi8L!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F237da72e-f261-45be-827c-58fb19bbc7e1_936x2115.jpeg)
What happens when I combine two old reliable staples? A pretty safe but nice-looking outfit. I wore my trusty Abercrombie curve love Sloane trousers with my Aritzia golightly cardigan. Basic AF! But arguably my most flattering outfit of the month.

Close-up for texture (like cereal.)
s_!bpsa!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F8392aaa5-90c1-4486-b2ae-f9e2ad3e283e_520x1022.png)
This one is really more of a sewing project, but this one project has created two outfits thus far, so here you go. First, I sewed this plaid coord set, which I wore for loungewear but I’m not above wearing either piece (or both) outside the house:

It also has a third piece—a skirt—which I wore with the J.Crew Emilie cardigan in blue (all-time favorite cardigan, this is my fourth color, all thrifted.) When I put together this outfit I wanted to do “preppy with a twist” but then…there was no twist. (Also, not to defend myself unnecessarily but the blue of the cardigan *is* represented in the skirt plaid, it’s just not clear from this photo.)
s_!YA3P!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F179df6c6-235b-4e33-9d63-fee30e2c5bd3_348x972.png)
Shockingly, I didn’t really do a lot of Black Friday shopping, mostly because I was so focused on sewing and worrying about various diseases. But I did get some things after the holidays!
While I have almost nowhere to wear this, I had to jump on a second-hand deal to buy this really cool Sandro chainmail-trim co-ord set for only \(100. I will find a way to wear this, even if it means showing up in it to my son’s karate class. Mark my words! s_!sQiI!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fc7e4a286-227a-484c-9655-d296f8da597e_580x580.webp)
I am also (finally) hopping on the long slip skirt bandwagon, so this one in dark green was a must:

Here is that skirt in action, paired with the Aritzia Shelly [cardigan](http://aritzia.com/us/en/product/shelly-cardigan/131192100.html?utm_id=21552601169--181624273831----749349168445&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21552601169&gbraid=0AAAAADn95OYOWyx5wc6zMnA4t-sTjna6R&gclid=CjwKCAiAj8LLBhAkEiwAJjbY7-1JMOVwI2A07pw4sLy-cr1NqzhKCEPK0EvauWfhtq3wGx8CrmD-qRoCHg4QAvD_BwE), an APC demi lune bag, and some Reformation heels:
s_!lSxu!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F069fbc08-f6dc-470c-8204-0a5ffe1e9bdf_797x2055.jpeg)
Closer up:

I also discovered this cool “made to order” designer called Yitai, and I couldn’t tell if it was a complete scam or legit. I can only wear 100% cotton sweaters, and his sweaters are 100% cotton, really interesting, and just affordable enough ($160) to make you feel like you’re getting a decent deal on a nice designer product, without being so cheap that it’s giving Temu. I had my eye on this porcelain-inspired sweater, but ultimately found it on eBay for \(100. I got a M (they’re unisex) so for someone who prefers things as tight and small as possible, it does feel a little weird wearing something SO oversized, but I think sweaters like this look best a little big: s_!DEdI!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F69ef139e-e677-4965-8739-374a5c09488d_1000x742.webp)
I eventually wore it for my friend’s baby shower with Madewell Emmett jeans:

I did not buy the lavender fields sweater, but I sure would like to. Unfortunately, it’s \(280 so I may have to keep scouring eBay: s_!tLVc!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7f259e19-684c-4f1f-92dc-dc72801bfcd6_640x788.png)
Now, thanks to some Christmas gifts from relatives and a customer service snafu related concession, I ended up with a ton of TheRealReal store credit after Christmas. I am really getting into primary colors for spring 2026, plus pops of purple. I’m most focused on cobalt blue. I actually don’t have a lot of cobalt in my wardrobe, so thank goodness for TheRealReal! Behold, my finds:
This purple chenille Sandro cardigan:

This striped Caroline Constas dress (only \(68!) s_!HA-4!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F9d9b024e-bd02-4363-b882-4360d0e100f4_544x696.png)
100% cotton Rag and Bone sweater. Sorry to keep mentioning price, I know it’s tacky, but this one was \(33!!! s_!4etU!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6a569525-4a23-4cdc-8844-32859f3da963_514x668.png)
Sandro preppy mini dress:

Also, I’ve decided that every year I have to buy some Weird Adidas. Last year, I bought the Taekwondo flats which I admittedly did not wear very often, so we’ll see if they still inspire me this spring. This year, my Weird Adidas were the Wales Bonner collab blue satin [sneakers](https://www.revolve.com/adidas-by-wales-bonner-karintha-lo-satin-sneaker-in-blue-quartz/dp/ASBF-MZ48/?d=U&tCurrency=USD&tCountryCode=US&tCurrency=USD&tCountryCode=US&deeplink=true&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PMax:+Product+Listing+Ads+-+PLA+-++Smart+Shopping_All+Products+-+HRR+Test&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23038373883&gbraid=0AAAAAD9qhJgQLBFbcqFXjTSZhxiLzc6AB&gclid=Cj0KCQiAhOfLBhCCARIsAJPiopPkNmwRcLn9gQiUzNQYhG7Mk8vrIJfBEyYg3Hz4j939PzGaiVICeTIaAss5EALw_wcB):
s_!ItAt!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F497c4d57-1d69-49f0-a0c4-2c2c7af24da7_588x502.png)
For Christmas, I made my husband a cool sweatshirt in one of his favorite colors. He really likes various patches/colorblocking, so I got a little creative and went to Spoonflower for cotton knit fabric printed with vintage coffee ads. Then I sewed those patches onto a sweatshirt I made using now-discontinued deadstock teal sweatshirt fleece from Lyrical Fabrics.

I used the same technique/fabric to make a sweatshirt for myself as well, which I’ve worn basically all month:
s_!kaJH!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F466269d1-68f0-432c-9af7-8aafa18ffb54_1541x2064.jpeg)
Of course, I had to make two stockings for my kids. My son loves monkeys and my daughter loves dogs, so I stayed on theme. Both fabrics were from Spoonflower—you can find the monkeys here and the dogs here.

Using the same monkey fabric, I made a sweatsuit for my son which he wore all the time:
s_!IDmW!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6ea1577f-d5cb-4f82-88eb-f298cdf0b4f9_4032x3024.jpeg)
And then using the cotton knit version of the dog fabric (I used minky for the stocking) I made a co-ord set for my daughter. I’m really loving the empire waist tunic paired with the silhouette of the wide-leg pants.

And just in case you weren’t done making fun of me for sewing a William Morris loungewear set that “made me look like a couch,” never fear: I did it again! You can find this fabric [here](https://www.spoonflower.com/en/fabric/15319636?buy_this=true&fabric_item_id=684169560&order_more_button_item_id=60346740). I’m now in the process of making a dress out of this fabric too, so stay tuned. Maybe that will look even more couchlike!
s_!ZC_i!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fcd34db3b-3b70-45a5-a356-84597605eb2d_1175x2165.jpeg)
I also made this cute black and white coord set for my daughter, using black polka dot cotton knit fabric from Lyrical Fabrics. I’m planning on sewing a maxi dress for myself using this fabric, so hopefully come spring that will be ready too.

Then, my sewing guilty pleasure: elastic waist pants! This is by far the easiest thing to sew, as far as clothing goes, so I’m doing it all the time. I made my son this nice pair of green corduroy pants (I made matching ones for my husband last [month](https://www.cartoonshateher.com/p/fashion-favorites-of-november)) and a genie lamp pair to go with his genie lamp [sweatshirt](https://www.cartoonshateher.com/p/fashion-favorites-of-november).
s_!ycc0!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F18c3f376-1bdd-4b75-b311-c467097bd89d_4032x3024.jpeg)
And teeny tiny baby pants for my daughter in green and blue, both really nice lightweight corduroy fabrics from Lyrical Fabrics:

For the aforementioned friend’s baby shower, I sewed this cute little pointelle sweater for her baby:
s_!AJUe!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fbb2cf64b-310f-4d68-ac5a-8a563acfa4e5_3830x1919.jpeg)
And this cute cold-weather spring outfit for my daughter. The fleece for the sweatshirt is Spoonflower and the corduroy for the pants are an old fabric from Lyrical that isn’t listed online anymore:

Another spring outfit for my daughter, using Spoonflower [fabric](https://www.spoonflower.com/en/fabric/12211185?buy_this=true&fabric_item_id=685301423&order_more_button_item_id=60655012):
s_!DUxM!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21deaf0a-97e9-486c-abe1-950946f9c509_2897x2883.jpeg)
And a Valentine’s Day dress, again using (broken record) Spoonflower fabric:

In case you were wondering about the skirt from the back/leopard bag outfit photo, here it is! I used this extremely simple sewing [pattern](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1648839433/aline-mini-skirt-sewing-mini-skirt-pdf?transaction_id=4892886424&lid=r8d9xe7p9i3x&utm_campaign=order_confirmation_registered_120925&utm_medium=email&utm_source=transactional&campaign_label=order_confirmation&utm_content=listing&eaid=483149494861&dispatch_id=694ea577f52fcad58e0b70be232764a2&%243p=e_sg&_branch_match_id=1455939867003004626&_branch_referrer=H4sIAAAAAAAAA61Qy2rDMBD8GueYhyTbcsGU0pLfEGt5bYvqxUrG6aXfXiUk0EN7KBTpoJ3Z0czuknNMT4cD5vSxhxj31vj3A4%2FPFRM89qjSvCvPQGY2HqxayfbLVVPxl4qdy922bX9T6%2BBKmQl8Ap1N8KUSsmNSNoKJip%2BtGSv%2BRnLsLtjGzvBLxZo1O6XBRTCzL2ygEUnp4CdDDq6%2FKMLZpIyEozqxY8fqu8rhaFZXNOjA2DuYwkoaC%2FgtB1zJh4eyMKD90emRJviMPpcWW3yNn%2F%2Bk%2FjXAPw6KcNukkPwkunJkcyroaFKErBd1I5tOINRtO9Vs0jDWEo9DexyQcdY2Atjuk3BCojKfGihsCal%2FXSg4%2FAIA4YbpEwIAAA%3D%3D) and some old stretch twill fabric I had from Mood Fabrics, which I actually bought for another purpose and I had extra. I really wanted a high-waisted mini skirt that was body-skimming but decidedly not bodycon, and clearly a mini skirt but not “bottom of butt cheeks” territory. I’m really happy with this one, and I’ll probably sew more skirts like this in the future.
