Self-custody without fear: your keys, your sats
Self-custody without fear: your keys, your sats
“Not your keys, not your coins.” You’ve read it a thousand times. But what does it actually mean, and how do you do it without being an engineer? This guide explains it in plain language.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📌 WHAT IS SELF-CUSTODY
Self-custody is simple: you control the private keys of your bitcoin. No one else can move it, freeze it or ask you for explanations.
• Without self-custody → a third party (exchange, custodial wallet) controls your sats
• With self-custody → you are your own bank
• The trade-off: the responsibility is yours too
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📌 WHY IT MATTERS
The industry’s history is full of “it wasn’t our fault”: frozen exchanges, blocked withdrawals, bankruptcies with users’ funds inside.
• FTX, Mt. Gox and friends: the lesson is always the same
• If you don’t control it, someone else does
• Self-custody removes that risk in one move
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📌 HOW TO START TODAY (without overcomplicating)
You don’t need your own node or a €100 hardware wallet to begin.
STEP 1 — CHOOSE A SERIOUS WALLET
• Mobile: Wallet of Satoshi (custodial, easy) or Phoenix (self-custody, Lightning)
• Desktop: Sparrow Wallet (the purists’ favorite)
• Hardware (when you have real amounts): BitBox02, Coldcard, Jade
STEP 2 — WRITE DOWN YOUR SEED PHRASE
• 12 or 24 words that mean everything
• Write them on paper, by hand, no photos or screenshots
• Two copies in two different places. Never share it
STEP 3 — TEST WITH A SMALL AMOUNT
• Send a small test amount
• Receive, send, restore the wallet with the seed
• Once you master the flow, scale up
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📌 MISTAKES THAT COST YOU DEAR
• Storing the seed in the cloud or in a photo → fatal error
• Giving your seed to a “support agent” → classic scam
• Losing the seed → goodbye sats, no way back
• Buying second-hand hardware wallets → tampering risk
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📌 THE SENSIBLE BALANCE
Self-custody is not all-or-nothing. A practical approach:
• Small amount: mobile wallet, daily use
• Savings: hardware wallet, in a drawer
• Trading/experiments: only what you can afford to lose
