Mirror Photo Shoot | STORY316

In 2020, the guys from the Apostolic Church were about to launch an evangelical campaign that included a series of video testimonies, pocket-sized Bibles with a custom design, a dedicated website, etc. The project is called STORY316.

I joined as a designer to help with the visuals. The core idea is built around four symbols: a heart (God’s love), an “X” (people’s rejection), a cross (Jesus), and a question mark (an invitation to respond).

The symbols alone struck me as a powerful form of visual communication, so I decided to create the promo photo using nothing but the mirror-foil-covered symbols - something I wanted to do ever since I saw it on the cover of Hillsong United’s Zion album.

There were some challenges along the way, the biggest being the support bars for the 1.5-meter-high structures. It wasn’t easy to make them stand firmly even in the slightest breeze, so most of the time it looked like one person set the symbols up and then quickly ran away so I could take the shot before everything collapsed. 😁

Since this was during the first year of covid, we were limited to traveling only a few dozen kilometers, because crossing district borders was prohibited. After some test shoots in mediocre spots, we almost accidentally discovered an abandoned mine and immediately declared it the winner. The symbols matched the scenery perfectly and created exactly the visual I was aiming for.

Fun fact about the final photo: I had borrowed a professional camera for the shoot, but after a long day of traveling and taking plenty of shots, the battery died. So I ended up taking the photo on my iPhone XS.
