Alfredo Gaspar’s elevation to Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential ticket has brought an unresolved allegation into the middle of Brazil’s campaign season. The federal deputy denies any wrongdoing and says the case is a politically motivated attack.

Reports say the sealed matter before the Supreme Federal Court involves allegations that Gaspar had a relationship with a 13-year-old girl that resulted in a pregnancy, as well as claims that money was offered to keep the family silent. The complaint was presented by Deputy Lindbergh Farias and Senator Soraya Thronicke, and the Federal Police sought Supreme Court authorization to investigate because Gaspar is a sitting congressman.

The procedural status is central to the competing accounts. One report describes the case as a preliminary review, with Justice Gilmar Mendes having sent it to the Prosecutor-General’s Office; Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet reportedly favored preliminary police steps before any decision on a formal investigation or charges. That means the allegations have not been judicially established, even as opponents have highlighted them following Gaspar’s nomination.

Gaspar has responded with categorical denials. He said he is “the person most interested in opening the police inquiry,” arguing that an investigation would prove he was the victim of crimes and reinforce his complaints against the politicians who accused him. He has also said a voluntary DNA test excluded him as the child’s father, while maintaining that the accusations stem from his work on the INSS parliamentary inquiry.

His allies, by contrast, have framed the choice chiefly around his political credentials. Commentator Paulo Figueiredo hailed a “pure-blood ticket,” calling Gaspar combative, experienced in public security and a standout of the INSS inquiry. Allan dos Santos simply presented the selection as Flávio Bolsonaro choosing the Alagoas PL deputy as his vice-presidential candidate.

The divide is therefore stark: critics emphasize the gravity of a still-pending allegation, while Gaspar and supporters stress due process, his denial and his anti-corruption profile.
