President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is seeking a conversation with Supreme Federal Court (STF) Chief Justice Edson Fachin after a session on whether to open an investigation involving Justice Alexandre de Moraes ended without a decision. Lula described the proceedings as a “horror show,” according to allies, and views a long delay as deepening the judiciary’s internal crisis.

The impasse followed Justice Flávio Dino’s request for more time to examine the case, a move that can delay the ruling for as long as 90 days. Lula’s allies argue that leaving the matter unresolved keeps the court at the centre of the electoral contest rather than allowing debate to shift to policy proposals. They reject the suggestion that Lula benefits from the pause, saying the uncertainty gives opponents more room to attack Moraes and the government.

That position is not a blanket defence of Moraes. Marco Aurélio, a Lula campaign coordinator in São Paulo, said Moraes’s actions in defence of democracy do not remove the need for answers about the Banco Master case: “It is important that Alexandre explain himself.” Lula has also called for a broader discussion about changes to the justice system.

The right-wing account frames the same episode chiefly as an electoral liability for Lula. It says the president urged Fachin to prevent the court’s conflict from affecting the campaign, quoting Lula as saying the chief justice “has the responsibility not to allow this to disrupt the electoral process.” The article links that concern to polling it says showed a close contest with Flávio Bolsonaro.

Supporters of Bolsonaro have gone further on social media, treating the court dispute as a reason to consolidate opposition backing. Commentator Rodrigo Constantino called on people angered by the conduct of Dino and Justice Gilmar Mendes to support Bolsonaro’s candidacy. Paulo Figueiredo, meanwhile, urged followers to persuade relatives to vote for Bolsonaro in the first round.

Both sides agree the STF confrontation has political consequences. Their divide is over who gains from the prolonged crisis: Lula’s allies say it sustains an opposition narrative, while his critics say it has already weakened him.
