Botafogo’s Tite Move Goes From Late-Season Talks to a 2028 Deal
Reports initially portrayed Botafogo’s negotiations with Tite as close to completion but limited in scope. One account said the former Brazil coach was expected to sign only until the end of the 2026 season, after regular discussions and meetings between the 65-year-old and club officials.
That version stressed the immediacy of Botafogo’s need: Tite could have been available to lead the side against Mirassol, and was expected to attend the club’s match against Grêmio at Nilton Santos. It also noted that the coach had previously discussed taking charge in 2014, when he declined the opportunity, and had been considered again after Artur Jorge’s departure.
Botafogo’s confirmation, however, set out a markedly longer horizon. The club announced Tite as coach “for the continuation of the season” but said he had signed a two-year contract running until 2028, rather than the end-of-2026 agreement described in the earlier report.
The announcement also detailed the structure around him. Matheus Bachi will serve as assistant coach and Fábio Mahseredjian as fitness coach, with Marcello Sales, Rodrigo Bellão and goalkeeper coach Marcelo Grimaldi also joining the staff. Bellão, formerly coach of Botafogo’s under-20 side, was promoted and was due to oversee the team against Grêmio.
Both accounts agree that Tite had been out of work since his dismissal by Cruzeiro in March and had been in talks with Botafogo since the start of the week. The difference is in what the deal represents: an initial report of a short-term solution has been overtaken by a confirmed plan extending into 2028.
