Sarney leaves hospital as pneumonia treatment shifts home
Former president José Sarney was discharged from UDI Hospital in São Luís, Maranhão, after three days of treatment for pneumonia, according to an account carried by Brazil Left. The report said he would receive home care with outpatient follow-up after being admitted on Sunday with a respiratory infection.
The Brazil Right account gives the same broad picture but traces the hospital’s updates more closely: Sarney arrived with a respiratory infection that included fever, doctors confirmed pneumonia, and his condition remained stable as he was treated in hospital. It said his blood pressure was controlled, he was breathing room air without oxygen support, and he received intravenous antimicrobials.
Both accounts describe a favorable course rather than a complete end to medical care. The Brazil Left report says Sarney was stable throughout the admission and did not require oxygen support, while the Brazil Right report notes that an earlier bulletin had said there was no discharge forecast before subsequent updates pointed to a possible release in the following days.
Sarney, 96, thanked supporters in a social-media message during his hospitalization: “My health condition is stable and I remain under medical supervision. I warmly thank everyone for the messages, prayers and expressions of friendship I have received.” The Brazil Right report also places the episode in the context of his long public career, noting that he became Brazil’s first president of the post-dictatorship democratic period, serving from 1985 to 1990 after Tancredo Neves’s death.
