Fed’s First Rate Rise Since 2023 Puts Inflation Fight Against Trump Pressure
The Federal Reserve unanimously raised its benchmark interest-rate range by a quarter percentage point to 3.75%-4%, its first increase since mid-2023. The decision had been expected by financial markets, but it runs counter to President Donald Trump’s preference for lower rates.
The account from Brazil’s left frames the decision principally as an inflation response. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said inflation had been “too high for too long” and warned that “inflation risks are rising,” while risks connected to the labor market were balanced. In that reading, the balance of risks gives the Fed room to focus on containing price growth rather than easing borrowing costs.
The Brazil-right account agrees on the basic facts — the 0.25-point rise, the 3.75%-4% range and the end of a long pause — but stresses the political backdrop. It describes the move as the first increase of Trump’s second term and the first under Warsh, who was nominated by Trump and confirmed by the Senate. It also recounts Trump’s repeated pressure on the Fed to cut rates, including public threats aimed at Warsh’s predecessor, Jerome Powell.
That account adds an explanation for why inflation concerns may have regained urgency. Although 12-month inflation was reported at 3.4% in August — its lowest level since March — it remained above the level the United States has historically regarded as comfortable. It links recent fuel-price increases to disruption around the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran war, while noting that Trump attributed higher global diesel prices mainly to the Russia-Ukraine war and said Moscow and Kyiv had agreed to halt refinery attacks, a claim neither side confirmed.
Together, the accounts portray the same policy shift from different angles: one as a conventional central-bank response to inflation, the other as a decision made amid unusually visible political pressure and geopolitical uncertainty.
