Vorcaro phone data access exposes a new STF fault line
André Mendonça and Luiz Fux have taken a narrower, procedural position in the dispute over data recovered from a phone seized from Daniel Vorcaro, the former Banco Master owner. Their offices say the material supplied by the Federal Police cannot yet be effectively accessed, rather than alleging that the police deliberately withheld it.
In a formal request, Mendonça said his office had been unable to open the contents either because of “technical operational difficulties” or a possible defect in the storage medium delivered by the police. He asked the Federal Police for operational support and for a check of the material’s integrity. The Supreme Court’s communications office confirmed that Fux encountered the same problem.
That account contrasts with reports that other justices have already begun reviewing the material. Data from one of Vorcaro’s phones, described as roughly 500 gigabytes of files, was delivered to the court after requests for access from several justices, including Cristiano Zanin, Gilmar Mendes and Alexandre de Moraes.
The difference is consequential because the files are reported to contain conversations, documents and contact records involving authorities and people close to power. The material has become central to scrutiny of Vorcaro’s relationships with members of the judiciary, lawyers and business figures. Reports cited references to relatives of justices and contacts involving court members, while those named have denied wrongdoing or inappropriate relationships.
Both accounts point to the same underlying issue: the phone data has become important evidence in inquiries connected to Banco Master. They diverge over its present status. Mendonça’s request frames the obstacle as one of access and verification; the other report indicates that examination of at least part of the same body of data is already under way, deepening debate inside the court over who may inspect the raw files and under what conditions.
