Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro clash over prison and pardon in 2026 race
At a rally in Florianópolis, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva cast the next presidential election in unusually personal terms, contrasting his own re-election campaign with the position attributed to Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a prospective rival and Jair Bolsonaro’s son.
“Flávio’s idea is: ‘I want to win the election to get my father out of prison.’ And I want to win to keep him in prison,” Lula said. Supporters at the event responded with chants of “no amnesty,” according to a separate account of the rally.
The contrast reflects two sharply different approaches to the legal consequences of the alleged coup attempt. Lula’s remarks frame continued imprisonment as part of defending accountability through the courts. The reports say Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced by Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court to 27 years and three months on charges including involvement in an armed criminal organization, attempting a coup and violent abolition of the democratic rule of law; he is serving humanitarian house arrest under a court decision.
Flávio Bolsonaro, by contrast, has said that if elected he would seek amnesty for people convicted in the case, including his father, according to the reports. That stance makes clemency—not merely criticism of the government—a central element of the opposing political message.
Commentators aligned with the right have also sought to broaden the argument beyond the legal case. Rodrigo Constantino described the election as “a plebiscite on Lula” and predicted that the president would lose. That interpretation differs from Lula’s rally message: rather than focusing on the fate of one former president, it seeks to make the vote a broader judgement on Lula’s administration.
Yet both sides are treating 2026 as a consequential referendum. Lula is asking voters to reject amnesty and preserve the court outcome; Bolsonaro’s allies are presenting electoral change as the means to revisit it.
