Lula’s betting shutdown pledge draws Bolsonaro criticism
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has again signalled that he wants to shut down online betting and casino platforms in Brazil, casting the proposal as a response to the social costs of widespread digital gambling.
Lula’s position is categorical rather than incremental. In remarks reported by a Brazil Left outlet, he said ending betting in the country was “a decision,” suggesting he sees closure of the platforms—not tighter regulation alone—as the appropriate course. The stance aligns with concerns that online gambling can place pressure on household finances and deepen addiction, particularly where betting is readily available through mobile apps.
The political response from the right has focused less on whether gambling creates risks than on the government’s credibility in addressing them. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro responded with a pointed attack, calling Lula the “father of Tigrinho,” a reference to a widely known online game associated with Brazil’s betting debate.
The contrast is clear: Lula’s side presents a shutdown as a matter of public protection, while Bolsonaro’s side portrays the announcement as politically contradictory. Neither report sets out a detailed timetable or legislative mechanism for closing the platforms, leaving the practical route to a ban unresolved.
The dispute also reaches beyond party politics. Any effort to end the sector would affect betting companies and football clubs that have increasingly relied on sponsorship arrangements, while supporters of tougher action argue that those commercial ties should not outweigh concerns about gambling-related harm.
