Fulton Sheen Beatification Links a Reported Miracle to a Modern Media Legacy
Tens of thousands gathered at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis on September 24 for the beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, a milestone that formally gives the American Catholic broadcaster the title “Blessed.” Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, acting as Pope Leo XIV’s representative, read the apostolic letter declaring that Sheen “may henceforth be called Blessed.”

The ceremony centered on the case of James Fulton Engstrom, who was born in 2010 and, according to accounts presented by the Diocese of Peoria and Sheen’s supporters, spent 61 minutes without a detectable heartbeat before recovering as his mother prayed for Sheen’s intercession. Church investigators concluded that the recovery met the standard for a miracle, and James—now a healthy teenager—was due to bring Sheen’s relics to the altar during the Mass.

For Bonnie Engstrom, the occasion was personal as well as religious. She described the route to beatification as an “emotional roller coaster” and said the Mass would be “a foretaste of heaven,” bringing worshippers together to celebrate the Church and “every good grace God has given us.”

Organizers also cast the event as evidence that Sheen’s media work still resonates beyond the generation that watched his television programs. Monsignor Jason Gray said early doubts over whether anyone would care gave way to a different finding: “young people are inspired by Sheen” as “a voice of integrity.” Bishop Louis Tylka similarly argued that Sheen’s mix of “truth,” “clarity,” and “charity” offers a model for communicating across divisions.

A repost on X amplified a statement attributed to President Donald Trump praising Sheen as a priest who “pioneered the use of media to speak the truth, preach the Gospel, and bring many souls closer to Christ.” The Church’s next step, however, is distinct from the celebration: canonization ordinarily requires recognition of a further miracle. Officials said six possible cases are under review, including reported cancer and neonatal recoveries.
