Judge’s press-access order pits due process against White House control
A federal judge has ordered the White House to restore press credentials for CNN, MS NOW and Politico for 14 days, finding their removal was likely carried out without adequate due process. All three outlets had been barred after President Donald Trump accused them of publishing “fake news.”
The two accounts agree on the central legal outcome: Judge Timothy Kelly said the outlets were likely deprived of a constitutionally protected interest without prior notice and an opportunity to respond. He also questioned whether revoking the credentials would genuinely advance national-security interests, noting that the cited reporting appeared routine.
Their emphasis diverges over the White House rationale. The Brazil Right account gives fuller weight to the Justice Department’s argument that “access to the White House is a privilege, not a right,” and that the president may regulate entry to restricted areas such as the Oval Office. It says the administration cited coverage involving Iran, potential Russia sanctions and an alleged underground bunker project as security concerns.
The Brazil Left account places the episode in a broader pattern of Trump’s clashes with critical media and foregrounds the outlets’ First Amendment argument. Their lawyer, Theodore Boutrous, argued that punishing journalists for reporting on security matters the government would rather not see covered is incompatible with press-freedom principles.
Both reports note that the court’s intervention is temporary, not a final ruling on the merits. Yet they differ in what they see at stake: one centers the government’s claimed authority to manage access and security, while the other portrays the order as a check on retaliation against unfavorable coverage. The immediate question—whether credentials must be restored—has been answered for now; the broader constitutional dispute remains unresolved.
