Brazil’s delegation left the UN General Assembly chamber as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began his address, joining representatives of other countries in the protest. The account carried by the Brazil Right grouping reports the walkout as a straightforward diplomatic event, without offering a wider political interpretation.

The Brazil Left account frames the departure against the backdrop of Brasília’s sustained criticism of Israel’s operations in Gaza. It says the Brazilian government has characterized the campaign as genocide, while continuing to support a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had again accused Israel of genocide in Gaza in his own General Assembly speech, and criticized settlement activity in the West Bank as further undermining prospects for two states.

Netanyahu, speaking to a largely emptied chamber, condemned the delegates who left. “If there are any more moral cowards who have not yet left this hall, please do so now,” he said, according to the Brazilian report. He also rejected the genocide accusation as “the greatest lie of the century” and argued that Hamas uses civilians as human shields.

The two accounts therefore agree on the central event: Brazil joined a conspicuous walkout during Netanyahu’s speech. Their emphasis differs. The first treats it chiefly as a recorded diplomatic gesture; the second presents it as evidence of a deeper confrontation between Brazil’s condemnation of Israel’s conduct and Israel’s insistence that the accusations against it are false. Brazil’s approach to tensions involving Iran, the report adds, has been different: it has condemned the use of force by both sides and called for restraint and diplomacy.
