Brazil’s growth forecast slips as inflation remains above target

Brazil’s central bank now expects slower growth in 2026 and 2027, with agriculture providing relative support while industry and services weaken. Its inflation outlook still places the IPCA above the target ceiling at the end of 2026.

Brazil’s competing political media perspectives converge on the headline finding: the Central Bank has reduced its projection for economic growth in 2026 to 1.8%. The Brazil Left source presents the revision as the central development, while the Brazil Right account sets it within a broader picture of uneven sector performance and inflation that remains outside the official target range.

The more detailed account says the forecast was cut from 2% for 2026 and that the Bank expects growth to slow further to 1.4% in 2027, down from its previous 1.8% estimate. It describes an economy in which stronger aggregate output does not necessarily signal broadly based momentum.

According to the Bank’s monetary policy report, “positive surprises were concentrated in segments less sensitive to the economic cycle, notably agriculture and extractive industry,” while “the more cyclical supply sectors and household consumption” performed in the opposite direction. Agriculture is projected to expand 1.8% in 2026, slightly above the earlier forecast of 1.7%. By contrast, the industrial-growth forecast was lowered to 1.5% from 2.3%, and services are expected to grow 1.7%, rather than 1.9%.

The inflation outlook sharpens the contrast between limited pockets of strength and the wider policy challenge. The report projects the official IPCA inflation index at 5.2% at the end of 2026—above the 4.5% upper limit of the target band—and says inflation would remain above the 3% target midpoint until at least the first quarter of 2029.

Taken together, the accounts agree on the downgraded growth figure. The detailed assessment, however, emphasizes that farm-sector support is not offsetting weaker consumer-facing and cyclical activity, while inflation is expected to remain a constraint.
