Brazil and Europe Test a Pix-TIPS Link, but Timeline Remains Open
Brazil’s Central Bank and the European Central Bank have opened a feasibility study into connecting Pix, Brazil’s instant-payment network, with the Eurosystem’s Target Instant Payment Settlement (TIPS) platform. The shared aim is to examine whether a cross-border link can work across technical, operational, legal and business requirements.
The account from the Brazil Right perspective places the study within a broader strategy to connect Pix with overseas payment infrastructure. It says a link could support “faster, more efficient and lower-cost cross-border payments” amid significant financial and economic flows between Brazil and the euro area. It also underscores the differing design of the systems: TIPS settles payments at the wholesale level, while Pix serves end users directly. The report frames the talks alongside other Brazilian efforts involving the Bank for International Settlements’ Nexus project and possible regional links in Latin America.
From the Brazil Left perspective, the emphasis is more cautious and procedural. Its account details how the study will test infrastructure compatibility, the flow of transactions, compliance with rules in both jurisdictions, and the potential demand from banks and users. It says the stated goal is to lower costs, speed up transfers and widen access, but notes that the central bank’s announcement “does not detail deadlines for completing the study or an implementation schedule” if the connection proves viable.
Both perspectives therefore point to the same potential benefit: reducing friction in payments between Brazil and Europe. Their difference is one of emphasis. One highlights Pix’s international expansion and the scale of the systems involved; the other focuses on the unresolved practical questions that must be settled before any link can move beyond assessment.
