Lula Holds a Narrow National Edge as Brazil’s 2026 Race Splits by Region
Datafolha’s latest survey places President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ahead of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a first-round test, but both the overall margin and a potential runoff remain close enough to underline the unsettled nature of the 2026 contest.
The left-leaning account stresses the geographic and demographic contours behind the headline. Nationally, Lula rose from 39% to 40%, while Flávio Bolsonaro remained at 36%; with a two-point national margin of error, the gap sits at the edge of a statistical tie. In metropolitan areas, however, Lula leads 42% to 33%, whereas the candidates are level at 38% each in the interior.
That contrast carries into the runoff simulation. Lula holds a 49% to 43% advantage in metropolitan regions, while Flávio Bolsonaro has 47% to Lula’s 46% in the interior — both results within the relevant margins of error. Lula’s strongest first-round support appears among lower-income voters, Catholics, women and voters in the Northeast; Flávio Bolsonaro leads among evangelical respondents and in the South.
The right-leaning account presents the same top-line figures as evidence of a stable, highly competitive two-candidate race, arguing that the closeness has increased pressure on both leading campaigns to consolidate tactical, or “useful,” voting in the first round. It reports Lula at “40%, against Flávio’s 36%,” with lower-polling candidates remaining broadly unchanged.
It also situates the polling in a campaign week shaped by debate over the Supreme Federal Court, a proposed 15% Bolsa Família increase and foreign-policy disputes. The account notes that opposition figures characterized the benefit increase as electoral, while the two frontrunners traded accusations over security and alleged outside involvement in the campaign.
Both accounts agree on the essential point: Lula starts ahead, but the lead is narrow nationally and masks electorates moving in markedly different directions. The survey interviewed 2,002 voters in 125 municipalities on September 22 and 23.
