Brazil’s late rescue masks attack concerns as Ancelotti urges patience
Brazil began its first friendly after the 2026 World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Australia in Townsville, rescued by substitute Rayan’s header from a Raphinha corner in stoppage time. The equaliser spared Carlo Ancelotti’s side defeat, but did not erase a disjointed display in which Brazil had possession without consistently turning it into clear chances.

The assessment of the performance differed sharply between the team’s coach and the post-match ratings. One account judged Brazil’s 4-2-4 setup ineffective, saying the side lacked creativity in midfield and struggled to connect defence with attack; Estêvão was among the few regular threats, though his first-half goal was ruled out after a VAR review. Australia then took the lead through Irankunda’s free kick, before Rayan headed in at the last moment.

Ancelotti, however, argued that the result should be viewed through the purpose of the fixture rather than as a setback. “We have to be patient because these are tests we have to do,” he said, pointing to opportunities for less-used players and debuts for Matheuzinho, Vitor Reis, Jair Cunha and Mauro Júnior. The coach said Brazil had reacted after conceding and described the final draw as deserved, adding that he expects to rotate the team to some degree for Tuesday’s second meeting with Australia.

Rayan shared neither complacency nor alarm after his decisive intervention. “We know we need to improve our defensive side,” the forward said, while crediting Australia’s approach and saying Brazil had been preparing set pieces in training. His goal delivered an immediate reward from that work, but the broader challenge remains: turning a late escape into a more convincing performance in Brisbane.
