Lourdes Faces a Pilgrimage Boom as Pope Leo XIV Arrives
Lourdes is preparing to receive an extraordinary influx of visitors for Pope Leo XIV’s first official trip to France, with faith, commerce and security converging in a town of about 10,000 residents.

Hotel operator Patrick Vinuales said the contrast with a normal weekend is stark: Lourdes usually hosts roughly 20,000 people, but about 150,000 are expected for the pope’s Sunday Mass and nearly 250,000 over the full weekend. “What I find very important is the enthusiasm of the people,” he said, describing callers who were pleased simply that the pope would visit the shrine.

For pilgrims, the visit adds unusual significance to a destination already associated with prayer, healing and the 1858 apparitions reported by Bernadette Soubirous. The pope is due to pray at the grotto, join a candlelit procession, celebrate Mass and visit sick pilgrims at Accueil Notre Dame. He is also scheduled to meet privately with seven survivors of sexual abuse in the Church, an engagement that acknowledges continuing criticism of the institution’s handling of abuse.

Businesses see the crowds as both a boost and a logistical complication. Grand Hôtel Moderne owner Joseph Tedesco said prices had risen and that more independent travelers were arriving than the large diocesan groups that usually dominate the market. “This event has caused more individuals to come and that is a completely different type of business,” he said.

Organizers, meanwhile, are focused on managing access. Registration is required for the main ceremonies, while vehicle restrictions around the sanctuary and enhanced security reflect the expected scale of the gathering. The prospect of peak occupancy across Lourdes’ hotels and transport network underlines the tension: a globally visible celebration for the shrine, but one that will test its infrastructure.
